Dzrt, thanks for the info. I can get my hands on a m/c from a '96 (may be the same as the '98 for all we know) and I'll install it without the proportioning valve and report back.

That's the proportioning valve from a ranger ^^ that proportioning valve is set up for drum brakes which I believe need less pressure than disk brakes. With putting an explorer master cylinder it eliminates that proportioning valve giving equal amount of pressure to the front and rear.

A master cylinder from an explorer, I got mine at autozone from a 98. I got a proportioning valve (this is not 100% necessary) and some extra hard brake line.

OK, i need new brakes and figure i'll do this upgrade. i've read through this entire thread and the OP at least three times but i still have some questions.
i have a 94 xlt 2WD, my understanding is that my diff is a 28 spline so i'm good to go, correct?
also i am running an open 7.5 axle, i saw stuff about the 8.8 but not the 7.5, so will this still work? (i don't understand the number difference, still learning)
i'm running stock wheels so my understanding is that i'll the GT brake hardware so i don't have issues with the rims, correct?
i found a junk yard with an 04 mustang, they said it was stock, not GT... are GT and V6 the same, with cobra being the different type? is there a way to determine what it is so i get the right parts?
thanks in advance. i figure i'll do a diff fluid change at the same time and learn to bleed the brakes! what a fun project this will be...

Yes your fine on the rear end.
Gt and v6 is the same. Only cobra is different.

thanks for the quick reply. did i read somewhere that i have to take the mustang diff apart to pull the parts or did i get that mixed up. i thought the hardware as on the outside of the flange, so i could just pull it off.
i'm hoping to get to the yard tomorrow. never been to one, hope the mob doesn't whack me

You have to take the mustang diff apart. Took me 5 minutes to pull the axles on the mustang, although I had a cordless impact gun I used. Just take diff cover off pull the pins that hold the axles and they should slide right out

I really don't want to break out the hack saw, but what else to use besides plasma or angle grinder?

I used an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel (aka the death tool)

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, you have a 28-spline differential. The rear axle didn't change, TMK, until the FX-series Rangers at the beginning of the 2000s.
2. About the 7.5 v. the 8.8: This refers to the ring gear size in the differential; in terms of doing this modification, it really doesn't make any difference, as what you would be concerned with are the diameters of the axle tubes. From my understanding, a 31-spline axle has bigger axle tubes than a 28-spline.
3. As for stock wheels, I'm betting you're running the 14" wheels. And yes, it will work, though you may have to finagle the e-brake before you're done.
4. The GT did have a V6 engine, which was the 4.6L engine. Most stock Mustangs, however, had the 3.8L V6, which is where I got my parts at the JY. The Cobra brakes are from a Cobra SVT Mustang, and usually those had larger tires/wheels, and had a larger engine than the largest engine that the Ranger had stock (a 4.0L vs. a 5.0L).
Also, to reiterate something, in terms of JY parts--please, under any circumstances, UNLESS YOU REBUILD THEM, please DO NOT use any parts that contain rubberized linings/gaskets. Because brake parts are under extreme pressure, if the rubber is old from the JY, it will burst under pressure, leaving you without brakes or worse. Recommendation: Use JY parts as a core to get new ones. Trust me.
Also, there was some misunderstanding about the proportioning valve, and which vehicles had them, and which didn't. Bottom line is, vehicles with discs front and rear needed them to proportion the brake pressure between the front and rear to better stop the vehicle under speed/load. As such, an Explorer or Mountaineer master cylinder would have a proportioning valve, whereas a Ranger would not. Disc brakes need more pressure, due to a caliper piston being larger than a wheel cylinder. It's simple physics, really--the wheel cylinder (drums) are smaller than the caliper piston (discs). Because the drums are smaller, less pressure is needed to achieve the same result.
