That's basically what I was expecting..different axle, different bolt pattern, etc. Wasn't planning on doing it just curious why nobody used Ranger disc brakes on a Ranger. Seems like it would make sense lol

Today I finally bought a master cylinder from an explorer and a wilwood proportioning valve. I'm going to install them tomorrow and I'll report back with the results. I'm pretty confident this will be the fix to the spongy pedal and it should give me a lot better braking since there will be more pressure in the rear brakes.

So I swapped in the new explorer master cylinder and proportioning valve and it brakes soo much better! The peddle still feels a bit squishy but I could live with it. Could also be that I'm running rubber lines all around.

Don't stock rangers have abs wires and wheel speed sensors on the drum brakes?
And how do you add the parking brake to this?

Also, I priced out pads rotors and calipers and it's slightly more expensive to get the gt parts than the cobra's,
Question: are the pads the same for both svt cobra and gt brakes?

Yes the rubber line do bulge a bit under pressure. Most are using braided stainless to minimize this. They bulge also, but so slightly that it is almost un-noticed. Nice setup with the prop valve. How long did it take to dial it in?

I haven't had time to fine tune it yet since I've been working a lot, I'm gonna try to adjust it tomorrow

And how do you add the parking brake to this?
sleeve the ranger parking brake cable to take up the slack of whats left when the wire is seated in the notch on the calilper. will make more sense when its in front of you.

have that last part backwards, cobras = more spensive and moar better..

My rear disc swap performance has been a bit disappointing since I did the install. Better than the stock drums, but not as near powerful as I would have expected.
I've long thought that the issue is the stock Ranger m/c so this confirms my suspicions. However, I was thinking about swapping the stock Ranger m/c for an Expo m/c from a year that has rear discs. I don't believe the Expo m/c had a proportioning valve, just different internals to compensate for the rear discs. Any reason why a just an Expo m/c wouldn't work to simplify installation?

The master cylinder I got was from a 98 since that year had disk brakes. It bolts on straight to the brake booster from the ranger. I don't think you even need a proportiong valve..I run my valve wide open and I don't have any problems.

No, I believe the bore is smaller. It's just internally designed for disc/ disc rather than the Ranger's disc/ drum which requires less pressure to serve the brake shoe cylinder.

Dzrt, thanks for the info. I can get my hands on a m/c from a '96 (may be the same as the '98 for all we know) and I'll install it without the proportioning valve and report back.

It's the same size, the thing that's different is that an explorer doesn't have a proportioning valve built in like rangers do.



That's the proportioning valve from a ranger ^^ that proportioning valve is set up for drum brakes which I believe need less pressure than disk brakes. With putting an explorer master cylinder it eliminates that proportioning valve giving equal amount of pressure to the front and rear.
