doing a disc brake swap on the rear of your truck is unnecessary and by far any form of maintenance. I deff would consider that abusing the financial aid you are getting.

im in my mid 20s, live on my own, work full time and go to school. i cant get financial aid because i make too much (even though im barely scrappin by) so you can see where the frustration comes from.

but anyway, back on track. good luck with your builds.

I can understand the frustration. But look at my situation like this. My drums were grinding. Upon disassembly a lot of the hardware was broken, shoes down to nothing, drum chewed up beyond re-turning, etc.. I was looking at about $175 for drums, hardware kit, and shoes alone for rebuilding my brakes. For just about $40 more I was able to put safer brakes on my truck. Safety is #1 to me as I have the kids in my truck all the time. I also work part time around school, and I am taking 18 credit hours (6 classes). I have always worked hard for everything I have ever gotten. I have never had anything handed to me ever.

Quick question, I have read this entire thread and it seems that everyone has a 4x4 or running 15" or bigger rims in their truck. I have the original 14" rims, will this MOD work on my truck or do I need to do some modifications? Also, if I find a late model Mazda with rear disc, will the rear end be an straight swap? I really dont want to spend money in new rims, so I trying to figure out if I can use this MOD and still keep the same rims and if there is a way, what are the changes when it comes to the parts that I need? Thanks and BTW this MOD is a great alternative than buying a kit from any vendor.

Will this work for a stock 02 edge? I would really love to do this mod!

I have GT disc brakes with the 10.5" rotors, and the brakes do clear my stock 14" rim. This was a mock up, I am running 15" rims, and my truck is a 2wd. Here is some pics..

The only way you'd know is if you can find out if you have 31 or 28-splined axle shafts. If you have the 31s, then no. By the way, 31s also come on the Explorer; if you do have the 31s, you might get away with doing an Explorer swap. Mustangs have 28-spline axle shafts, which is why it works on the Ranger.

As for my truck, I'm doing this mod because there is so much on my truck that is bad (drum brakes drag from time to time, and I want to eliminate that, as well as when maintainance comes around, this build is quicker to maintain, in terms of time with less headache) and, as well, I've got some suspension work to do as well anyways.

In terms of the Mazda rear end, I would have to say that it would depend on if it bolts to the rear suspension and leaf springs. If the design is similar, check and make sure that the shocks mount in the right place, that there is a RABS sensor in the axle (if you have RABS), and make sure the axle will fit the same way under the rear of the truck. Brake lines and the like can always be modified to fit.

That is great, I believe it will be a lot easier than taking the chance at buying an entire rear end and not matching. At least this way I can buy the parts as budget allows and when I got them all do the MOD. Thanks for the answer, I dont really want to make too many alterations to the truck, I like it simple as it is but a little upgrade here and there that wont require major modifications or money is always great.

the only thing you should be cutting is the mounting plates that bolt to the axle flanges. not the actual caliper brackets.

what do you mean by "in stack"

on a mustang axle they mount on the outside of the flange, on the ranger axle you have to cut them and mount them on the inside/backside of the flange to make up for the shorter axles.

you can but there will only be one bolt holding that piece together and wont do much for you structurally. the best thing to do would be to cut it, mount it and have it welded back together. the only problem is that these are made of cast so youd have to have the proper welder to do that.

for a street truck/daily driver you should be more than fine with the 3 bolts holding it together.

if youre really worried about them breaking or coming loose id suggest running some grade 8 bolts with nylocks and some red locktite.

I had his mod on my 02 ranger (tremor) for a few months now and loving it. no problems at all with the 3 bolts. I asked the same question about them brackets getting cut. After reading the install about 4 time i realized why I had to. The bolt on the inside of the axle fang but you swap the left and rights. # bolts will be just fine. Just make sure you trim up the brackets a bit to clean the welding of the axle. I seen people using washer to space out the calipers because of this. I didn't need a washers at all and it all lines up flush. Just a little but extra grinding is needed. I believe I posted some pics up a few pages back.

I used a 2002 ford mustang gt rear brake set up. I'm also using the 16" stock wheels. I didn't use the dust shields. Looks nicer with out them.
