Thanks very much for this thread. It made me do it much quicker because I thought it would be more involved. It also saved me several trips to get the right size. Only one crawl under and done.
I also used valvoline merc V and it made shifting much smoother. Most glad I did it.

This how to applies to all of the M50D-R1 transmissions. My transmission is the M50D-R1HD transmission, but the difference between the non HD and HD transmissions doesn't affect the fluid level and the process in which you fill it.

So my Ranger is 94 2.3l with the 5 speed manual (4 plus overdrive) I recently had to have some of the gears rebuilt because the truck has nearly 140k on it and I don't think it was ever maintained. Before the guy did the rebuild he told me when he popped the drain bolt there was almost no fluid left and what was there was full of metal. Anyway he rebuilt it and topped the fluid and everything seemed to be okay for awhile but now I'm hearing a whining sound from the trans and there's a bit of a grind going to reverse from a stop and it shifts rough into first from stop. Is it possible that the new fluid picked up some old gunk and spread it around? And if so would changing the fluid again possibly help? (It's been about 3 months since the work was done)
This is the first vehicle I've ever owned and I've done my best to take care of it and I've been trying to learn how to do all the general maintenance stuff but lately it seems it's trying to fall apart on me. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Have you been noticing it leaking? It's probably leaking. Out of the shift rail plugs.

So I have a 95 ranger 3.0 with the 4 speed with overdrive, it's kind of hard to put it in 1st then sometimes it scratches going into reverse. I can't figure out why. If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Slave cylinder, that or the clutch system needs to be bled

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
have you check your fluid levels? Just like just brake fluids, if it runs low, you'll get stuck every time

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Check your clutch master cylinder level. (inside of the drivers side fender there is a small reservoir that takes DOT-3 fluid.)

*update*.... I can't move the shifter at all it is "in neutral" but stuck in first. It moves probably moves like
2-3in very stiffly left to right. But won't go into any gear even with the clutch pushed in. I don't really want to drop the tranny but have a feeling that's the last resort.

I've had this happen. Pull your shifter out. There's 3? Bolts I think holding it to the top of the transmission. Remove them and pull the whole shifter out. Then use a long stout screwdriver to shift the transmission back to neutral and replace the shifter
