Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
I went to check my fluid today and took the *fill* nut off and about 1/4 quart of red atf poured out immediately and made a big mess in the carport... is this unusual?

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Not unusual, no... Quite possible that either your carport is not level or the person who filled it last time was on an angle with the low side towards the passenger side. Make sure you check/fill on a level surface.

There is actually a check level bolt right next to the fill. If there is a little bit too much in there it won't hurt anything, hell my fluid was 10 years old before I changed it, a little overfill is fine

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
I got to say how helpful this was to me. I knew how to do everything but for the life in me I just could not find the amount of fluid needed lol. I used this thread as reference when I rebuilt my tranny and today when I changed the fluid lol. METAL SHAVINGS EVERYWHERE. Great write up!

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Nice write up!
I am confused about the selection of fluid. Why do we use Automatic Trans Fluid on a Manual Trans?
I was thinking about royal purple man trans fluid.

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Changed my fluid tonight.
Just bought my Ranger at 110,000 miles, I don't think it was ever changed before. That was gross.
Thanks 02RangerFX4.

Yeah, I didn't think mine was ever changed. I changed it at 120,000 miles and it was pitch black when it was supposed to be red, but when I changed it it got quieter!

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Hey, just wondering about the fluid..... Can one use any synthetic automatic transmissioin fluid instead of mercon V?

I'm not really sure, but ford/Mazda specifically designed the transmission to be run I mercron V.
It says in the manual to use it.

Re: M5 Manual Transmission Fluid Change
I've noticed adverse affects a few thousand after changing mine out.
Don't think it was ever changed up to 115k miles, changed it, a month or two later second, third, and forth started mildly grinding, clicks into 1-4 rather than a smooth quiet shift (ie. I can feel shifting into the syncro and then into gear), etc. I drained about a quart out and added an additive designed for ATF (auto and manual) to fix slipping, etc, and the grinding has been reduced significantly.
FWIW, the quart I drained out was more black than red, so the detergent in the ATF cleaned a bunch of shit out which led to more grinding (I had the most MILD grind going into third before if I didn't let RPMs drop, but now it happens almost every shift.)
Fair warning to you all with high mileage who don't know the history of service to the tranny.
I had a feeling I would need to rebuild it eventually, but since it took months to go south after the fluid change, I thought I was basically in the clear.
Good luck to you all!
