Default How To: Dual ignition Plug mod (Dual plug 2.3/2.5L only)

This mod is for anyone with a 2.3/ 2.5L with the dual plug setup

here is a simple mod i've been testing the past few weeks

no tools required

nothing needs to be purchased

all you need is basic common sense

I've been thinking about this mod for a while but didn't think it was worth doing until i came across it in a 2300 racing forum.

i finally tried it and tested it out before posting this "how to" cause i wanted to make sure it worked.

i have seen an increase in city and highway gas mileage and some more low-mid range power (between 1200 and 3500 rpms)
i wanna say about 8-10 horsepower but that could be pushing it...

my city mileage was a fairly steady 19 mpgs (i don't drive far to work)
and my highway mileage was a steady 27 as long as i stay at 70mph

after this mod (i've been checking my mileage regularly just to notice any changes)

my city mileage has jumped to 22.5

and i made a special trip to my in-laws (115 miles round trip) just to test the highway mileage...

and my highway mileage came out to be 30.2 MPGS!!!

so...ON TO THE MOD!!

Step 1: open your hood and locate your coil packs

Step 2: on the FRONT coil pack.....(the one with wires going to the drives side of the engine) label your wires so you know which ones they are
here's a little diagram just in case
4 2
1 3

Step 3: remove all 4 wires and re-install them in this order...

1 3
4 2

Step 4: enjoy

you just modded your truck

this mod basically turns the exhaust spark into an ignition spark
so you now have 2 plugs firing on the ignition stroke instead of just 1.

this burns the fuel more efficiently and in turn gives you better MPGs and more power.

Can this hurt my truck in any way shape or form?

Nope. This coil usually fires on the exhaust stroke to burn excess unburned fuel.

You could unplug the coil and the truck would still run.
That particular coil is there for emission purposes.
This mod actually puts that coil to good use and provides 2x the spark on the ignition stroke instead of wasting a spark on the exhaust stroke.

This seems too good to be true.

I read that Ford added the second set of plugs to prevent detonation, wouldn't this mod just cause detonation?

That's why I've been testing it for the past few weeks.
Tracking my gas mileage for both city and highway.

I didn't want to post a "how to" and have it suck.

Remember though, I keep my truck in tip top shape all the time.
Your results may vary depending on how you keep your truck maintained.

I may consider this, but I want to wait till more people chime in, and speak to my mechanic about it. A few extra HP and better MPG's sound great!

I don't see how. They're usually being used on the exhaust stroke. This mod just changes the wires around so the spark is routed to the cylinder on its ignition stroke.

of the 2 plugs per cylinder only 1 fires on the ignition stroke and the other fires on the exhaust stroke in stock form...
this mod changes the order of when the EXHAUST plugs fire.

so now BOTH plugs on each cylinder fire on the ignition stroke.

Detonation is caused from fuel detonating in the cylinder before it is ignited by the spark.
like if you used 83 octane gas in a high compression motor.....

this mod just doubles the spark....the compression of the motor is not changed
this utilizes an ignition source that is already there

Ford added it to burn unburned fuel in the exhaust for cleaner emissions

heres a link to the page i came across a few months back...

http://www.hotrodhigh.ca/2300Shockin.html

this guy originally did it to a mustang,

and back when i built my mini-stock 2300 i put in my 87, everything i did to that motor was originally for a mustang.

the old mustang 2.3's are identical to our ranger motors (except a few minor internal differences)so why not use the same mods

hmmmm may try this just scared of it screwing up my engine or something possibly leaving me stranded or worse, costing mega bucks for repairs.
