Doesn't sound good for the heater core. And yes, they are a pain to get out.

Oh Yea, I'm well aware of the royal pain in the ass that job will be. Which is why I was hoping it could potentially be something else that we've missed.

Any recommendation on whihc Heater core to go with? Local parts shop has an aftermarket heater core for $86, where as the local ford dealer is $164.

Is this one of those parts where its worth while to go with an OEM part, or would aftermarket be sufficient?

I have a 2000 with 4 cylinder 2wd ranger with a heat issue that just started. Replaced the thermostat yesterday but go to the store today and no heat. The 2 pipes coming up to the 4 way valve from the engine are hot but then only 1 of the 2 going to the firewall is hot so that would make me think its the heater core but the flow chart doesn't work for my scenario.

1 going to firewall is the hot one and the one is cold so wouldn't mean that its the heater core? I assume the cold one would be the return from the heater core.

But then I go to drive the truck home and the heat works fine. When it doesn't work, it doesn't work meaning its not even slightly warm. Also a year ago I replaced the radiator with new fluid and I have no coolant leaks.

I want to say thanks for posting the troubleshooting chart for fixing my heater. I couldn't get any heat thru the heater and had tried several things that didn't correct the problem. Tried to remove the actuator to check it but my hands are too big and I gave up on that. After reading your post on the flow chart I tried looking at things differently. I found that I wasn't getting hot water to the heater. I disconnected the hoses , cleaned the control valve and flushed the heater core both ways. reconnected everything , added anti-freeze and was extremely happy to find that I now have a working heater in my 1998 Ford Ranger v6 3.0.. Thanks again

Now if I can just find how to get rid of codes 171 and 174.

Anybody have a copy of these flowcharts? Seems like they would be useful for the problem I'm currently having, but the links in the original post are broken.

Confused on how a coolant change made my 2nd fan setting work again...?? Prior to the fluid change, settings 1,3,4 worked but not 2.

I'm simply making a reply to this thread because the pictures/charts from the first post do not show up. All I see are triangles with an exclamation point in the center of them in the place where the pictures/charts would be. Have the pics/charts been removed?

I'm having a problem with my '05 4.0 Ranger heat not working. My guess is my heater core is bad because, as I mentioned, I have no heat and the last morning I drove the truck it was cold enough I had to scrape frost off the windshield which is the first morning I have had to do that this fall but I had all kinds of condensation on the windshield (inside the cab). It was bad enough I had to wipe it off with a rag. I tried the defrost several times and each time the condensation would be just as bad.

What does your temp gauge say when the truck is 'warmed up'?

I know this thread is super old.. But ive been having heating/ac problems. I have replaced the blower motor resistor, the blower motor relay, checked blower motor (still works). The only thing left I think is the fuse, but if not then can it be the blend door?

No settings of the fan speed work, however when I change between face, feet, etc. I can hear what sounds like a pump or something every time it changes setting. I really dont know what else to do.

Ive tried multiple of those. I will check all of them but as I do feel heat pushing into the cabin when in motion, I dont think itd be a blend door or low coolant

Smile Re: NO HEAT Troubleshooting Guide

Figured out the problem. Very upset with myself.

So my process for diagnosing the whole problem the PROPER WAY:

1. Check fuse in cabin at spot #2, its a 7.5amp fuse. If not it, move on.
2. Check blower motor relay in engine bay. When looking it should be the relay next to top right corner. Can be swapped out with other relays in that box to check for functionality. If not, move on.
3. Blower motor - Take some wire and connect battery to the plug spot for blower. Should spin when electricity is made. If not, then that’s probably your problem.
4. If all fan speeds aren't working, replace blower motor resistor, which is right next to the blower. I would reccomend getting new pigtails, because the metal inside usually melts together, making it unable to separate the plug.
5. If only get heat or only AC, it might be the blend door. Some are manual, which can be found behind the glove box area.
6. If you dont get heat, check to see if there is enough coolant in the reservoir and radiator (makes sure its relatively cold bc of pressure).
7. Hoses to the cabin might be clogged, ChrisFix made a tutorial on how to flush it easily.

Bottom line is check fuses and relays first before you go blowing money on random parts , my problem was simply a fuse I found after diagnosing for multiple days.
