Awesome write up. We're having trouble with the wife's 07' Ford Edge 3.5L V6 with approx. 63,000 miles. The thermostat appears to be stuck in the open position (and therefore defective) since heat is barely coming out of the vents -- and cool. From my research, I have found that there is a problem with 07-09 Edge's heater core being plugged (not leaking), however, the upper radiator hose is warm and the lower hose cool -- indicating again possible thermostat issue. We have had issues with the air/heat before, and under a TSB, Ford "fixed" the blower motor and flushed/filled with new coolant and replaced the hose to the water pump. My dad says that there is a chance that "the temp. control sensor" is bad but that is unlikely since it is "part of the thermostat". Either way, I'm taking the vehicle in tomorrow to have checked. I have the "Premium Extended Warranty" through Ford, but they want $104 to diagnose and then a "$100 deductible if the warranty applies". If I take the vehicle to a non-dealer shop, and the thermostat is defective, it most likely would be cheaper. Either way, it probably is going to cost $200 - $250, correct? Last, do extended dealer warranties typically cover a thermostat or heater core? Any help will be appreciated.

Hey, Matt,

I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to respond. I really appreciate your write-ups and quick responses. I got involved in some other things and have not been able to get back to the truck until today. I guess I need to give a little more clarification on my heat problem, in that I am not totally without heat. There is a little heat, but it is not nearly as warm as it used to be. I can adjust the temperature control knob and the heat temperature fluctuates with the movement between no heat and some heat.

I wanted to attempt the back-flush procedure as you suggested, but, for the life of me, I cannot detach any of the hoses. Is there some trick to it? If I cannot get the hoses off, I guess I will just live with it, but I did want to try and fix it myself.

Thanks, again, Matt!

Ok FireRanger, or Anyone
I followed the diagram to the T and still no heat. Im quickly loosing my mind and the kids currently have more money than I do! At this point I have replaced the tstat, temp. control knob, had the system flushed, the blends door checked, the heater core checked, and the system vaccumed of all air. Still no heat. The intake and return hoses to the heater core are hot. The dash board temp comes up just above the cold mark after a good drive(it has always done this, even when it had heat)Still blows straight cold air. Im at a loss. I took it to a local little shop and the older man had it over night and when I came back to check the progress he looked at me me with a little smug smile and said "let me ask you little lady, are you sure this truck once had heat"? haha he said it was the biggest mistery to him bc he couldnt find the problem!! so ANY more suggestions ANYONE can give me would be great.

I'd say your new thermostat is either bad or installed wrong and stuck open.

Haha. I'm not sure, I couldn't describe which way it goes. You might search around the forum, someone may have a picture.

Chances are the hoses feel hot but are really just warm. Sounds like the water pump to me.

Thanks for the help!!! Your diagram was dead on....saving me at least a thousand dollar service bill. After reviewing your diagram and finding that the hoses going through the fire wall were never getting HOT, I replaced the hot water valve. After reading what is involved with replacing the heater core, I was very lucky. The hole process of replacing the valve took aboout 20 minutes and less than twenty dollars. I am still doing my happy dance Its soooo warm in the truck!!!
