The dome light was a bitch. Shattered a bulb lol. But the wire went right into the headliner so that was fast. The wiring and dome took a majority of the time. Oh and there was some pizza involved as well

Does the mustang dome retain the same screws? So that I wouldn't have to rewire it just replace the whole dome?

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
depends on your year, for yours, i believe yes, no rewiring! if it has two black boxes that the screw goes in, youre good to go! if you have one, then you have to rewire for map lights

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
I just bought one of these. Better quality than my OEM stop lamp. Just FYI. http://www.partsgeek.com/ss/?ssq=bra...5&model=Ranger

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
Just got done with this. Was actually rather easy and fast, only took me long to finish cause I was stumped at the wiring...I couldnt figure out why you had the black wire piece in there when you plug the plugs back in the ground is set..unless im missing something but I ended up just running the red wire to dome and put the plugs together and it worked...well the 3 bulbs in the unit I got were all burnt out so had to run to the store.
For sure its getting some leds tho.
I hate those T taps so I went a little more secure
This write up helped alot, thanks!

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
I have a 2004 ford ranger and im looking to do this, the light i currently have is straight red. Do all ford rangers have the same setup for the light or have the screw holes changed over the years?

Fastener pattern and footprint are unchanged.

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
I don't mean to awaken a dead thread, but I just did this to my 02 Ranger XLT extended cab on New Year's Day and I think I found a slightly simpler way to do it. I have the same setup where the lights come on with the dome, but instead of wiring into the cab harness, I spliced into the main cargo lights power wire on the brake light and it works great. Everything else is wired the same. That's just my quick tip on this mod.

Re: How to: Install 3rd brake light cargo lights (when its not plug and play)
I just wanted to point out that Step 4 is completely unnecessary. All it's doing is connecting two wires that are joined when you plug in the connector, making it redundant. All you have to do to make this work is tap into the positive wire that sends power to the cargo lights (purple, in my case), run that wire into the cab and connect it to the positive terminal on the dome light. Simple. 1 wire, 1 ring terminal, 1 tap connector. Took me all of 10 minutes.
Thanks for giving me the idea, I never would have thought to pick up a 3rd brake light from an older model Ranger to add stock cargo lights to my '09. I ended up ordering a brand new Dorman aftermarket light assembly from Summit. It was a little more pricey than getting a used OEM one from eBay, but it's worth it to me since I don't have to deal with old, faded plastic. Plus the Dorman part has gotten pretty positive reviews around the internet.
Thanks again for the write-up. Great idea!

Disclaimer - I have read what I can find, have an OHC installed, mustang dome (thanks Hillyard) and lights on third brake (thanks MattFx4) work... so not completely inept. Problem is, I tapped cargo lights into dome (black/ violet to constant) and they turn on with keyless/doors but won't turn off until 10min timer runs out. Dimmer switch won't control them though, Dome works exactly as it should. Anyone have ideas? Can I add a switch for cargos without breaking line for brake? Is this what the extra black to black wire is for? Any feedback is welcome! THANK YOU in advance.
