Just did this mod yesterday and can't really tell a difference. I'm sure it helps because you are allowing the motor to breath better, but don't get your hopes up. I would recomend it to anyone, but i honestly didn't see a difference in sound or performance.

From following through the steps in the mod, it looks like this piece is not reinstalled. Doesn't this remove channeled air by shrinking the air gathering area?

Maybe i have this wrong, but I don't get it.

Not trying to knock STL because so much of what I love about these forums has his avatar in it somewhere.

Can someone help me understand?
When I did this to mine, I didn't reinstall it. Didn't seem to hurt anything. But the only thing I noticed from the mod is a little noise so...whether it is necessary to put back on or not only a test would determine.

I did this mod and the difference was only very slight sound in certain situations... I'll be putting it back to stock because in normal driving didn't make any noticeable diff

Mine is done and sound is a kind of mean when you stomp on the pedal. Performance a little better but it may be in my head. Gonna leave it off - can't hurt. (Much to all the people that think otherwise - there is quite an argument going on in my other post.)

After not really noticing much of a difference in sound today I put the air box mod back to stock. Driving I didn't notice much of a difference from driving with the mod done... one thing that I really didn't like though is when I looked at my air filter

When I had things apart to do the air box mod the entire air filter had a very even coloring and looked good (after 24,000km) but today after only a short period of time with the mod done (800km) the filter had a very dark spot in the corner at the air box opening and the front edge was much more dirty than the rest of filter. Looks to me like the dirt that would normal hit the box and sit in the bottom of the box to be wiped out latter his hitting the front edge of the filter Anyway I'm happy the put the pieces back.

Here's a pic of the filter... 800km ago the entire filter looked like middle right of the filter no dark spots.

I found easier if I reached under the box to hold the grommet while I pull it up... I screw drive to pry the two really helped too.

did this back in november 09 and it seems to be working fine lol i did for sure gain the little sound but H.P gain i don't think so. I just wonder though if it sucks in to much air? is that possible? would it make it kinda jumping on take off? 5-speed also. or do i need new plugs and wires? lol

i mean there must be a reason why ford put these on here.

- Can you suck in too much air: No. Think about the wording of that. Air is sucked in. It can only suck in as much as it needs.

- The thing is called a silencer. It's purpose is dampening intake noise. Nothing to do with performance.

I think the pieces help in how enters the box and avoids having dirt collecting on the front edge / corner of the air filter. Take a look at the pic I posted above... Excessive dirt collection on one edge and in particular one corner is not a good dirt pattern on a filter.

That piece is there to keep crap out of your air box, people need to think! Those pieces are there for a reason, its not like they are going to add stuff for no reason at this point. Kinda sounds like the dumb azz who drilled holes into his airbox to get more air to his rig... freakin stupid!

Yes it's a silencer but also keeps out crap... what crap? all the crap that turned the front edge and corner of my air filter black in a very short time. I'm thinking that pulling air from outside the engine compartment is cleaner than inside. Plus an intake to the box instead of air flow direct on the filter edge is cleaner?
