Okay so I put it to run
Change gear to 1
And pull the negative cable

When I'm done I just put neg cable back on and change back to Park and turn it off?

It dosent matter that the battery is un done. Your not starting the truck, you're turning the key and pulling it into 1st

It's really not rocket science.

Yes. And the plastic where the gauges are is REALLY fragile. Dont break it like I did. I broke the middle spot where its screwed into the dash

Guys i tore everything apart already, except the cluster.
The stupid gear selector cable is in the way....
How do i remove the cable so i can pull the entire cluster out?
I pulled the white tab out but there is a red thin wire that goes into the cluster itself..

You dont have to do that. Get it to where you can turn it around and do it. Thats what I did.

I just replaced the lights on my instrument cluster last night. The pics and descriptions were great all the way to the end where I hit a snag. The instructions don't mention how far out you can remove the whole cluster. The pics look like he took it completely out of the truck but there is a little cable which is not mentioned which works the indicator for the auto trans, (P,R,N,D,2,1). That cable keeps the cluster from being removed and I was really afraid I might break it. Anyway, I replaced the 5 bulbs but it seems like the light doesn't light up the top of the speedometer well. Maybe that bulb is still not working. should I take it all apart again and replace that bulb again? Ideas?
Thanks

Look behind where the kick panel mounts and follow the cable with your finger and you will see where the cable is mounted to the truck. It uses a 5.5mm screw and the cable is hooked onto the shifter so watch out for that. Other than that just make sure you screwed the bulb holder in all the way and that its contacts are clean. Also check the bulb. Sometimes you get a bad one.

Theres a vid on youtube of a guy removing one from an explorer. the same in a ranger

Thanks bigfisher,
I am not clear what you mean. Should a guy disconnect that cable? I don't know what a "kick panel" is. I think I may have a bad bulb. I will look for the video you mentioned. Thanks for your input.
