Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
So changed my filter on a 2008 ranger using this technique and all was ok, except that when I pulled the fuse, I couldn't even start the truck to let it idle out the fuel in the line. Tried pulling the fuse while the truck was running and it immediately stopped. Was a little worried that the pressure wasn't relieved, but dove under anyhow to remove the old filter. I guess there wasn't any pressure built up as hardly any fuel came out.
All in all, worked great, and this is from a newbie when it comes to mechanical work. Just not sure why there was no pressure in the fuel lines? Truck had been working fine before this, just thought I should change the filter.

How long had it been sitting before you did this?

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
At first, I would say a couple hours anyhow. But since i wasn't able to start it, I put the fuse back in, ran it for a few minutes, then pulled the fuse, and it died immediately. From reading a few threads, It appears I do have a very noisy fuel pump also, so I'm wondering if that is why it wouldn't run after pulling the fuse?

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
Probably a good rule of thumb is to change the fuel filter at 40,000 km, 24,000 miles. When it gets plugged up the fuel pump has to work a lot harder. If you flush the old filter out you will be surprised at how much sediment was in there.
----------
The fuel filter with the 3 nipples bleed the pressure off when the pump is not running and that is why there is no pressure there when you pull the lines off.

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
Does anyone happen to know what sizes the quick connects are? I just recently replaced my filter with the help of someone who's done it before (but his former house tenant took off with his quick connect tools), and when we put the new one on, the larger of the 2 back lines is not snapping on properly. In fact, 3 days after replacing it, it popped off when I started it up to go to work.... Any help please? I wanna say the size is 3/8, but I don't know what size line it is. Everywhere I go look at the parts, there's several different possibilities....

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
I tried pushing the orange and green button in with my fingers and it won't release. I only loosened the gas cap, do you think there is still much pressure in the lines? It will hardly budge.

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
Just changed my fuel filter and got a nice splash of gas on my face and some ran down my arm lol. But i did find the problem was my filter. It was causing me to get horrible gas mileage. It was clogged up with some old gas and dirt. My truck has 142,000 miles on it ad i dont think its ever been changed

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
Good news...replaced fuel filter via this post's great instructions on how to replace the fuel filter!
Now the bad news, reinstalled fuse, inertia switch was reset, now it won't start, just cranks....I can hear the fuel pump turning on.

Re: How To: Fuel Filter replacment on 2001-2011 Ranger
This tutorial was helpful.
Especially the post about relieving the fuel line pressure from the schrader valve by the rail.
My 2 bits to add?
Well, make sure you have the tank side release tool if your line needs it.
I started with the intention to get by with a homemade shim from a bushing cut in half; did not work. On top of that - the only auto store within bicycling distance had the cheapest tool priced at $23... at least its a lifetime guarantee if I can manage not to loose the small parts!
Anyone have any homemade tools that actually work for future reference to others?
New to this forum here, but have already saved a couple hundred in parts an labor from the wonderful knowledge sharing.
Kudos to all.
