We experienced the same problem with the filter on my '03 Ranger today. Finger pressure was NOT going to get the lines off. I'm going to buy the tool tomorrow.

If it is built up with debris. Spraying it with wd-40 to get that stuff out will allow you to just squeeze on them.

Quick and Easy...

I put few WD40 onto the clips, wait for 5 min, follow the guide and done!

Thanks to all!

I finally replaced the fuel filter. Finger pressure wasn't sufficient, so I used the shaft of a small screwdriver to gain a bit of leverage and popped them off.

A bit of a warning: don't buy a WIX filter. The body is longer and narrower, and while it comes with a new mount, the added length puts pressure on the molded fuel lines. The lines are uncomfortably close to the frame now.

great write up for changing the filter. this was way more helpful than any other guide. One thing to pay attention to is the kind of fuel connectors you have that attach to the filter. I had the style that this presentation had, where you press in the tab (green or orange) and it pulls right off. i saw in other videos the older style that the clips needs to be raised or take out before removing the fuel line. What is everyones opinion on using motorcraft fuel filter compared to duralast?

Not sure why you are removing fuse and removing gas etc. Here are the instructions from Workshop Manual:
Disconnect battery ground cable.
To relieve fuel pressure locate underhood schrader valve in fuel line to engine (faces front, below intake manifold) - place rags below valve, remove cap and relieve pressure (same as removing air from tire valve).
Locate fuel filter under truck (inside driver-side frame rail).
Disconnect push release and r-clip fittings (I was able to do this without the special tool - not too difficult).
Remove and reinstall filter.

For those who are rookies at fixing vehicles like myself..maybe this will provide some help. Above, great job on showing the change. However, you were wrong about having to spend $200 dollars on a new line. I broke one of the connecters because I didnt research enough and watched a youtube video of someone pulling a similar clip out of the connect with a flat head screwdriver. Bad idea...so I took a little advice from someone I work with that has much much more knowledge in this area and this is what we did.

First off here is what the connecter looked like after I broke the clip, incase anyone has the same problem..

I was extremely pissed at myself for doing this because 10 mintues later I found an actual video that had my same fuel lines and I realized I did it all wrong..

SO! Now to fixing it.

All you have to do is go down to your nearest auto parts store, pick up a couple ft of hosing and some hose clamps. I used 1/4" hose on mine, just bring your filter to the store if your not sure and they can tell you what size to get.

Follow your fuel line from the connector and you will see the rubber hose ends at a metal pipe. cut the rubber around the metal pipe clean off with a knife/razor/whatever..something sharp..it should look like this when your through

Measure the distance of hose you need so that it will reach from the end of the pipe to your new filter. Attach the hose to the pipe about an inch or so in and then add a hose clamp. make sure its tight.

Use the same procedure to attach the hose to your new fuel filter

(the random tie wire was just to support the fuel filter a bit more since i didnt have the option of bolting it on)

I attached the other ends of the fuel lines as so...BUT!

A couple days later the fuel lines that had the old connectors came loose. I dont know if it was a result of them being too big for the new filter or me not making sure they were tight enough. Result..I lost a quarter tank of gas down the road..not cool. So I went back to the store, bought more hoses and clamps, and cut and replaced those as well. It was a bit harder because they were plastic but it works. Its been a couple weeks now and Ive had no problems what so ever.

Hope this helped..and saved you $200

To above, great red neck engineering. I did this job yesterday. First two hoses came off easy, last one was a bitch. I sprayed it with WD-40 and then it gave way as well. Of course one popped off soon after starting, garage now smells of gasoline and will do so for a week or more. But, got it back on all is well. Not that hard to do...

Good videos! I just bought an '05 Ranger Edge with 125k miles. The previous and original owner was so shitty with maintenance. This was one I can check off my list now. I ended up having to have a head/valve job done on cylinder 5 because the moron before me never changed his oil/filter and all the buildup caused it to bend, meaning almost no compression in #5. Lesson is... maintain it and it'll run forever. Don't maintain it and the guy after you gets dick screwed.

I have a 2002 and it has the plastic connector on front but the 2 on the back are steel. How do I get those apart?
