Default How to: Door Glass window replacement (93-97)

My first write up so bear with me here.

Discussion thread here http://www.fordrangerforum.com/how-s...t-93-97-a.html

This is a write up to replace the door glass in a 93-97 ford ranger
hand crank style power may be a little bit different but glass is held in the same

est. time : 30-60 min.

this may need to be done if yours is chipped or was shattered like mine

Tools needed:
4 1/4" rivets
3/8 rachet
11mm 3/8 socket
Phillips head screw driver
Torx head screw driver
Drill
1/4" drill bit
Crescent wrench
The two handed rivet gun

Step 1: park somewhere with light and remove the key from the Ignition to keep the door ajar alarm off

Step 2: Take off the door panel. 3 screws one on the bottom left hand side in the slits, one on the top right on the triangle piece. the other is in the handle inlet. those take the phillips.
Now pop the little cover off you hand crank window lever. then this is the Torx head just unscrew it and pop the whole thing off.
Now pull up on the door panel it will slide up and off easily.

Step 3: Remove the door speaker and the dust shield (paper thing covering all the holes) The speaker uses the phillips.

Step 4: Pull off the behind the window rubber trim as seen in picture already removed (requires window to be down to make easier)

Step 5: Now unbolt the rear window track and remove (this makes removing easier and installation alot better) this uses the socket and rachet

Now You should see this

Step 6: now take the drill and drill out the center of the rivets here
Use the crescent wrench to pull the rivets off afterwards

Step 7: Now you should beable to pull the old window out threw the front of window opening

Step 8: slide new glass in same way old one came out

Step 9: Now line it up and bolt the track back in.

Step 10: Line the new window up with the bracket and rivet the new window in like so...

Now Just reinstall everything the way it came off and enjoy your new glass

Hope this is good enough for anyone who needs it

nice! I was looking at this thread just to see how to pull the inside door panel off to replace or repair a speaker.

Just an addition to your write up-
I take a small punch (smaller than the center of the rivet) and hammer out the steel part of the rivet. Then just drill the aluminum with a 1/4" drill bit. The steel is always a pain to drill, and also to keep centered.
It might seem like you're going to break the glass hammering on the punch, but I've done quite a few windows on Rangers, and I've never had anything bad happen.
It makes the drilling process MUCH easier.

Nice guide! We tried to drill out the rivets for my ranger but we shattered the glass. It was almost through the second rivet and then it exploded lol. We finally used a grind wheel and just ground off the rivets until we could just pop them out. It was an experience trying to get that window into my truck to say the least lol.

This is definitely the way to do it. I have done this and never broken any glass. The first time you try it, you think that hammering the punch will surely break the window. But the center will push out before the glass breaks.

When I put new glass in, I usually use a 1/4 inch threaded bolt and nut, so there will be no drilling next time.

Also, I think this will work on 1998 and newer Rangers.

Great write up.

I think this applies to 1998 and newer Rangers as I did this with my '00 and it looks exactly the same.

FYI, rather than rivet in my new glass, I use 1/4 inch threaded bolts and nuts. So if I ever to replace again, I would not have to drill anything out.
