The Powertrain Control Module is in the passenger side firewall. Read 'Important note #2'.

The #1 pin location is almost always marked on the connector shell with an embossed "1" if you want to bother looking for it. The alternative is to simply find the color code. If it would be easier, the other end of the same VT/OR wire can be found at the Speed Control Servo on the PS inner fender behind the washer fluid reservoir. There are only about 8 wires to deal with at the servo.

Is this the orange violet wire you speak of?

That is the speed control servo connector but I can't tell the color code of the wire pointed out in that photo and I don't know what year Ranger that is.
In all 1995~2011 Rangers, the corrected VSS signal in the speed control servo connector should be on the wire to pin #3. Violet/Orange is the color code for 2007~2011. Gray/Black was the color code for 1995~2006.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
Just finished this!! Cause mines an '05, finding wires was a bit more annoying. I used the violet/orange wire from the Smart Junction Box (the weird looking switch things just above fuses near the passenger side) for the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
Pics tomorrow; its dark and raining outside lol.

This is not correct for 2005. You have connected the console's VSS wire to a 12V source, not to the truck's VSS pulse.
The VIOLET/ORANGE VSS wire color code is for 2007~2011 ONLY.
2006 and earlier Rangers use the GRAY/BLACK color code for VSS.
The GY/BK is not available at the SJB for 2005~2006 Rangers but can be found behind the instrument cluster or in the large bundle of wires near the p-brake pedal.

hehe yea found that out on my way to work this morning
Thanks for that info; I couldn't find the gy/bk at the SJB and the only other instructions I found were for the violet/orange.
When I get home today I'll hopefully find the gy/bk near the parking brake. Thanks for the help rwenzing - I have a ford factory cd but its not loading the wiring diagrams for some reason

Re: How-To: OHC Install
I got the vehicle speed sensor wire hooked up, and everything works if the engine isn't started. but if I drive for 5 minutes, it will work fine and then the compass/temp readout stops working after 5 minutes or so. any ideas? I checked my ground and its fine, and as stated it works fine if the engine isnt started. maybe I got a wrong wire in the radio connections?

2004~2006 use a unique group of wires for the console swap. Be sure that you are using the correct instructions and not something for an earlier or later Ranger.

Also, the Ex console display has a known problem that may cause it to go out intermittently. This may help:

Re: How-To: OHC Install
I got it all working!! I had the wires hooked up all correct, but that link to the explorer forum fixed the problem with the console losing power after awhile. I took pictures of that if anyone is interested. My circuit board was a bit different than the ones in the how-to but I managed to figure it out.
Also, I accidentally cut a bit too much out of the headliner; you can see it in the first picture. If you do this, you can add some screws and washers to help keep the headliner pushed against the overhead console.

With Gap:
Added washers/screws (there's one on the other side too):
