No problem. I cannot remember which site or thread I found that, but at least I was smart enough to cut and paste it for future reference. Figgered it may come in handy some day.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
Okay, the info on the function of the speed sensor makes sense given the readings I had on the OHC today.
1. Started the drive home from work with a cold engine- as the info suggested, the correct temp displayed on the OHC.
2. On the way home, I washed the truck- and sprayed some cold water on the sensor. On restart a few minutes later, the temp was indeed lower than the previous reading- so it displayed a lower temp.
3. A mile later, I stopped to run into the grocery store. When I came back a few minutes later, the temp read the same as it did when I stopped (because the sensor was reading a HIGHER temp than before now). As the info said, since I don't have the speed wire connected, after a few minutes the temp started going up by 1 degree per minute.
4. Here's where it got interesting. I disconnected and reconnected the sensor with the truck running- which caused it to default back to -19F. Drove around a bit, and the temp started climbing one degree per minute from -19. That was annoying, but then I read the info and realized the temp would reset after 2 hours.
5. Sure enough, I let the truck sit for 3 hours, went out and started the truck and it read the correct temp.
So, even though hooking up the speed sensor wire (gray/black) IS optional, if you stop and restart the truck it will cause the temp to not read correctly for some time. Fortunately, once the truck sits for 2 hours it resets.

There you go. Interesting is it not? I found the VSS wire in the harness right next to the parking brake. Your 04 should be the same, easy peasy assuming you ran a wire for it from the OHC that is.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
Where have you all mounted the sensor? I have moved mine several places and still cant get a accurate reading, mine is always off by around 5 degrees or so according to accu weather.

I mounted mine directly behind the Ford emblem. There is a small vertical support there and on my 05 there was even a hole already there for the support pin on the temp sensor. This is an ideal location for the sensor in my opinion as there is a constant movement of incoming air to negate any engine heat affecting the temp reading. If you are concerned with the sensor's accuracy check it with a digital thermometer, not AccuWeather.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
Mine is zip-tied behind the driver's side fog light (basically behind the lower part of the bumper), which puts it in about the same position it was mounted on the Mountaineer it came from. It almost always reads within a degree of my phone's weather app.

Mine is positioned between the the header panel and the grill, on the left side, between the radiator, and headlight. It has always been within 1 to 2 degrees of whatever the the time & temp signs scattered throughout town say.
If you have been changing it's location without success, you might consider that the sensor is bad. I am not sure how you could test it, or if there even is a test for it. Maybe one of the members here that are better versed in Ranger Electronics will have a better answer for you about that.
I did a quick Google search. Scroll down Past the YouTubes about the Air Intake Temperature Sensor videos, there are quite a few forum topics concerning the Temp Sensor down there. Hopefully one will help you.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
Have the install in 2010. All works, but read-out is dim. It brightens up in tha acc. position, or when headlights are on at night. Power wire is the switched positive at radio. Anyone else have this? Put unit in my 98 that had this mod, and it shines bright. Need help. Any Suggestions?

I take it you checked your dimmer switch to insure it is turned all the way up? Also, try a different 12V source just for grins and chuckles to see what happens.
