I don't think its the OHC itself. Because the lights coming on shouldn't make the display turn on and then off. Hmm... I guess just double check all your connections, make sure they're all clean and good.

Installed ohc in my 2004 today. Everything works fine but the read out doesn't dim with dimmer switch. Is it suppose to? It dims when you turn on the headlight. Otherwise it looks and works great.

Nah, as far as I know it isn't supposed to because mine does the exact same (no change with dimmer, dims when headlight comes on).

After wiring the OHC to my 96, I have power to my OHC lights and nothing else. Here's how I wired:
Gray/yellow = yellow/black at radio
Red/black = blue/red at radio
Gray/black = gray/black at GEM

Orange/green to dome
Black/gray to dome

Blue/white to sensor
Blue/yellow to sensor

Black grounded to mounting bracket

Using my test light I get power at the plug on orange/green and black/gray when the door is open and power to the Gray/yellow when the key is on acc.

With the truck running I have no power to red/black gray/black blue/white or blue/yellow.

I unplugged the GEM so I could access the gray/black better but plugged it back in before testing.

I have a truck full of dangling wires. Any ideas??

Hello all,

I was following this thread (rwenzings wiring guide) and have run in to a snag...

ConsolePower: Grey/Yellow ---> White/Blue (white wire with blue stripe - truck radio harness)
Console Night Dim: Light Blue/Red or Red/Black ---> Blue/White (blue wire with white stripe - truck radio harness)
Console Maps: Green/Orange ---> Violet/Red (truck radio harness)
Console Dome: Black/Blue ---> Green/Blue (above truck's factory dome)
Console VSS: Grey/Black ---> Violet/Orange (pin #1 of the truck's center PCM connector)
Console Ground: Black ---> truck chassis ground

The 2 lines in red - Grey/Yellow to White/Blue and Green/Orange to Violet/Red are not in my 2010 radio harness. What is the 2010 year equivalent? I have a white and white/black and also a violet and violet/black.

Another, probably important question, am I tapping these directly into the radio harness or the wires going into the GEM on the left side behind the radio?? And to make sure, I only have 1 wire at the dome light in my 2010, so only 1 wire from my OHC harness to the dome???

Thanks,
Frank

These two wires run directly between the overhead console and the ambient temperature sensor, completely separate from the truck harness:[*]Console temp: Dark Blue/White ---> Temp sensor Dark Blue/White[*]Console temp: Dark Blue/Yellow ---> Temp sensor Dark Blue/Yellow

These wires at the console pigtail would need to be extended and tapped into the Ranger's factory wiring:[*]Console Power: Grey/Yellow ---> White/Blue (white wire with blue stripe - truck radio harness)[*]Console Night Dim: Light Blue/Red or Red/Black ---> Blue/White (blue wire with white stripe - truck radio harness)[*]Console Maps: Green/Orange ---> Violet/Red (truck radio harness)[*]Console Dome: Black/Blue ---> Green/Blue (above truck's factory dome)[*]Console VSS: Grey/Black ---> Violet/Orange (pin #1 of the truck's center PCM connector)[*]Console Ground: Black ---> truck chassis ground

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Important note #1:
Notice the difference between the White/Blue and the Blue/White wires in the radio harness as listed above. These are not the same and they are not interchangeable.[*]White/Blue = white wire with blue stripe[*]Blue/White = blue wire with white stripe
Important note #2:
The PCM is in the PS firewall and has 3 connectors. The center connector has the VT/OR VSS wire at pin 1. The #1 pin location is almost always marked on the connector shell with an embossed "1" if you want to bother looking for it. The alternative is to simply find the color code. If it would be easier, the other end of the same VT/OR wire can be found at the Speed Control Servo on the PS inner fender behind the washer fluid reservoir. There are only about 8 wires to deal with at the servo.
Important note #3:
The 2007~2011 Ranger no longer has practical way to tap into the "Battery Saver" feature for use with the Ex console map lights. So, if a map light is wired to a constant hot (Violet/Red as shown above) and it is inadvertently left on overnight, it could kill the battery. An alternative would be to wire the maps to the keyed console power (White/Blue referenced above). Of course, then the maps would only work with the key in the RUN or ACC position. It's a matter of preference.
Hope this helps! It is on page 6 in this discussion thread.
Thanks, but I've read this and checked the harness over and over. The two wires I am looking for (white/blue and violet/red) are not in my radio harness.
Hmm. Not sure then.
I did see your location, so on not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Don't know much about the differences in the Canadian rangers.
Maybe post this in the Canadian region on the forum to see if anyone else has had the same issue?
Have you tried looking at other gen rangers wiring diagrams? I have an 05 and I had to do a bit of searching when wiring it up. 05s had some differences from pre-04s and 06+.
Alright, well I feel like an idiot now. I found another bundle of wires below the harness that had the correct colours (thank god). I tapped in to those and the OHC powers up now. The map lights wont turn on (even with doors open), but I checked and am missing a bulb and the other might be burnt out - gonna try buggmans led panel I think. Dome light still works though.
Now I need to run the wires through the firewall somewhere for the temp sensor and the VSS wire.
