More than a bit peeved right now!! Just finished all wiring, but temp sensor.
A quick power connect to check things. A complete, fucking waste of my time and effort!!
I have absolutely NO power to OHC. Even if I temporarily hold temp sensor connections together by hand, nothing works. check, and double checked the wires before making connections, so I didn't screw up! And I still failed to get it right!
Now, I have to get rid of the OHC, and find out where I'm gonna get a new headliner, to replace the now damaged one, from cutting in the OHC mounting bracket.
Again, a total waste of the last 3 hours spent working.

After talking about it it Dad, it was also suggested that maybe the suitcase connectors
are not making contact. That they're not cutting through wire insulation completely.
Need to find Dads multi meter, so wires can be checked for power.
I may need to go back and rewire things a different way, if suitcase connectors are found to be the problem.
Will check on that tomorrow. Now, too cold, too dark to want to continue!

But, mine is a 2001.
Not sure if it'll be the same or not.
Followed the How To here, and things failed to work.

Sent a quick message. Still waiting.
Think Dad is gonna get a new multi meter, so wire connections
can be checked for power. I'm gonna try tapping in a different way.
If this doesn't work, I'm ripping the whole thing out, and throwing in the trash!!
Cutting my losses at close to $75 for the OHC and all installation parts, wire, splices etc..
And hope I don't get ripped too bad on a new headliner, to replace to now severely damaged one!!

Personally, I think better wiring description is needed, and better photos of the wire connections also
needed. Would make things MUCH easier to work on and under stand!!
Even some sort of wiring diagram would help.
MY opinions ONLY!! Based on a failed attempt at installation.

Got my reply. Also yanked out the suitcase connectors I used originally.
Used the butt splice connectors instead. When power restored, it worked!!
Turns out, the case connectors didn't make the necessary contact.
Dome light and temp sensor left. Gonna do dome after dinner. Temp sensor Sunday night, or Monday, if not too bad weather wise.
Feeling much better about this project now!!

Finished wiring in the temp sensor today, with a little help from Dad, trying
to find a way through the firewall. Now, does it matter how the temp sensor
is connected? From sounds of it, through a link I followed, that does not matter?
Have my sensor mounted to frame, up front. Is there another place, better, that I should mount? Photo in AM if needed.
A quick drive, after I finished, showed no change in temp shown on console.
Console showed 49, while actual temp was 38. Something I need to be concerned about?
Or just a case of crossed wires again?
As always, information much appreciated.
Thanks.

Locate the sensor away from any source of hot air flow that could influence the temperature - radiator, engine, exhaust. Stock Explorer location is forward of the rad core support near the driver side headlight and this works well on the Ranger too. When the truck is moving, that location keeps it out front in the cool air flow. When the truck is moving very slowly or stopped, the temperature does not update. This is to prevent any stray heat form causing temp errors.

The temp display should update when moving ASSUMING that the gray/black VSS wire is properly connected to gray/black at the GEM. Without that input, the reading will tend to freeze because the console thinks the truck is stopped.

Temp reads OK. A bit off though. Will move sensor to
different location later.

Now for another problem. An odd situation may be more like it.
Have a minor problem with OHC map lights. They work, but backwards!

Left button - Right lamp
Right button - Left lamp.

I thought I crossed wires when I made my connections.
BUT, the map lights are backwards, regardless of which
way they're wired.

I just find it a bit odd more than anything.
Any thought/ideas on this are appreciated.
Thanks.

That's how it's supposed to be. If you look, when you press the left button, the right lamp lights up, which seems odd, but it's pointed towards the driver's lap.

^this

The OHC in my expedition does the same thing. That's how it works.

Makes sense. Guess it's a simple case of mind over matter?
If I don't mind, it doesn't matter?
Maybe next up, is an LED replacement light insert.
Once I'm getting full paycheck again!
Half a check smarts, but better than nothing.

The guides on this site need to list what years for the OHC and what year Ranger these apply for in the first page. Scrolling through 30 pages is unpractical.

I have an 02 Ranger. Will my wire colors be roughly the same?
What years do I need to get an OHC from?
