Thanks for the info, buddy. Any other possibilities as to what may be wrong with the display? I will definitely check the solder out, but I would like other options to check out (like whether or not I wired it wrong??) while I have it all apart.

Thanks!!!

Okay. I dug into the OHC just now. I checked out the circuit board and gave all of the connections a good look over. I did not see anything that would possibly cause a problem in the way of solder. The only issue that I found was this:

Im not sure if this is an issue, but you would think its not supposed to be like that. Do you think that this screen is possibly burnt out? Is there any way someone can take a look at a board that is for sure working and tell me if there is a burnt looking spot on there screen? I am thinking that this is my issue, and that I will just have to replace the circuit board.

Any input?

Are you talking about the first large 3-segment LED character? The shape is such that it can display a "minus" sign for negative temps and a 1 for triple digit positive temps. I'd say that it's supposed to be that way.

As to the bad solder joints, I don't think that they are necessarily something that you can pick out doing a visual.

No sir. I was talking about the actual screen itself. Here I circled it in red:

I will probably just try to get another circuit board and see if that works.

Well. I know for a fact now that I have wired it wrong. A buddy of mine has a 98 Explorer with an OHC. Plugged mine into his, and it comes right on. Now I need to figure out the wiring. Anyone with any ideas???

Here is how I wired it up, although, I have wired in my speed sensor wire now.

Black/Gray-I did not run this wire. I saw other instructions saying its not necessary to run this, but after reading this thread, I want to run it now so my temp is correct at all times.

What type of connections did you do at the wires?

The first thing i would check is the ground wire. make sure thats getting a solid connection under the screw.

Then if that doesn't work then i would check the yellow/gray connection and make sure that is connected good.

----------

Is the ground screw going thru one of screws that secures the bracket to the roof?

Yes. Sorry, I answered most of these questions a few posts back. I only quoted how I wired it. I have it grounded to the screw and I know its a good ground, because my lights work. I also used tap connectors to wire everything to the back of the radio. Again, my lights work (I used the same type of tap connectors) so I don't think my tap connectors are the issue. I am almost 100% sure that I wired something wrong.

I will double check the yellow/gray wire tomorrow night after work and will double check all of the wiring. I actually realize my radio still had the sticker on it that explains what each wire in each of the harnesses do. If someone can tell me what each wire in the OHC harness does, maybe that will give me a decent starting point for what to look for whenever I check out the wiring tomorrow.

----------

AHA! I realized that in the very first post, the OP explains what each wire does. I will be testing everything tomorrow and will keep you guys posted. If anyone still has some advice, please shoot it my way. I need all the help I can get!

Are sure about this? I don't believe that there is a yellow/gray or gray/yellow wire anywhere in the factory harness to the radio connectors.

Although there are many possible options in the truck, the console gray/yellow is usually wired into the factory yellow/black (yellow w/black stripe) that goes to the radio.

Well I figured it out! I pulled my radio bezel out again, and sure enough I didn't have my yellow/gray from the OHC in the correct spot. I had it wired into the ground wire for the left rear speaker. LOL That wire is yellow/tan, so I understand why I screwed up. Anyway, I stuck the yellow/gray from the OHC to the yellow/black on my radio and it starts right up! Calibrated the compass and its working like a charm! This mod is awesome! I highly recommend it to everyone. The only thing that I noticed was my temp is reading about 5-7 degrees too high. I used to work at a rental car store, and all of the thermometers in those cars always seemed to read high, so I'm not too terribly upset. It gets me close enough.

rwenzing, I really appreciate all the help!

Just some insight here.....

After each connection I tested the wires with my tester so did not have to worry about weather or not they were good.

You will not need to cut the entire length of the metal bracket out of your head liner. I held mine about 3/4" short on the end where the sunglass go. I was worried that I would cut too much out and it would be able to be seen. Somone else mentioned this happened to them. Maybe I will shoot you a photo with a tape measure in it so you get a good idea.

When possible I soldered all my wires and put on 3M heet shrink tubing. Otherwise I used the 3M connectors everyone else uses.

I picked up a 100' roll of 18 guage wire from menards for about $9. It is in the Automotive section. I ended up with a good harness of wires.

From the connector the ground wire was about 10". The dome light wires were 30". The three that go behind the radio were 8' which I needed every inch. The two that went to the sensor were 18' (but I only needed 15'). I ran the wires down the passenger A-Pillar. I poked a 3/16" drill bit thru the hood release boot on the fire wall and pulled the sensor wires thru with a coat hanger/wire and ran them along the same path as the hood release cable. Clean.

I am very patient and did the install over 3 days of a couple of hours each day. I was not using the Ranger as I am driving the Stang now.

Damn I forgot about menards for the wire.... there 2-3x a week. But yes , i don't remember reading this anywhere else but it is a good idea for the part of the metal bracket that faces towards the back of the truck to get tucked in under the headliner so that when you tighten the OHC down the headliner pulls down for a nice flush install.
