[QUOTE=kingkong1469;515781]ok so i have an 03 ranger and i took my dome off and i saw 2 wires that had screws in them for power ground for my stock one i assume. and i got my dome out of a f150 so i unplugged the wire from the f150 but my ranger has no plug. do i just screw the f150 dome in and hope it works? much appriciated[/
\

cut the plug off the wires and t tap the power wire into the power and then screw the ground in

Pulled a dome light from an Explorer for my 2011 Ranger, and the map lights don't continue to work when I turn the car off. The middle light (non-map light) continues to work for the expected 10 minutes. Any ideas?

Update: The 2011 Ranger has different colored wires than what is listed in this guide. The green with orange striped wire connects to the fan for cabin air. Still trying to figure out which of the other 23 is the right one. Ugh.

That is because people need to post or PM me with the wire colors for the newer trucks.

2009-2011 white/red stripe wire

Thanks for the suggestion but I have confirmed that this is NOT the right wire. I'm not entirely sure of its function, but the white with red stripe wire has something to do with ABS/traction control (or the automatic systems in general). When I hook up the map lights to this wire, reconnect the battery, turn the car on, then turn the map light on, the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminate on my dash.

Edit:
I'm happy to post the wire colors for my truck (2011), should I give them to you in any particular order so you may know what each color is tied to?

My apologies for clogging this thread up. The white with red striped wire behind the headlight switch IS CONFIRMED to be the right wire to splice into for the 2011 Ranger. The problem is that there are two nearly identical white/red stripe wires in that cluster. The thicker white/red stripe wire is the correct one. It's found a little closer to the center of the car (harder to spot) than the thinner white/red stripe wire.

Confirmed, my 2004 has 2 wires from factory. It was built in 08/03. Good write-up, thanks for all the info.

Great write up. I just installed one I got from Pooleo and went in without a problem. Thanks for making it easy.

Question Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod

I've had my 2011 Ranger for almost 2 months now. I'm finally ready to do my first mod. Just to clarify, I will need to run a wire for power to the dome light correct? And I'll need to splice into the thicker of the two white wires with a red stripe?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You got it man. Let us know if you run into any issues or have any questions. The white with red stripe wire is approx 20 gauge thickness so I recommend using 18-20 gauge wire to splice into it. Its a relatively very easy mod but if you've never spliced before there's a bit of a learning curve for that. You have the benefit of learning from our mistakes haha, but from my experience, every little thing I messed up on was completely reversible so no big deal.

So glad I re-read this thread! I was just going to ask about which of the two white/red wires to use. By using the thicker of the two white/red wires, do the map lights time out like the dome light does? I'm currently tapped into the thin white/red wire; the map lights work fine, but they will stay on indefinitely. Thanks for the info!

That's what mine does too. Stays on indefinitely if you don't turn them off manually. There's been a lot of people trying to hook the map lights onto the 10-minute timer with no luck, so I think you have it set up as good as it gets. Minor inconvenience for otherwise very useful lighting.

Never mind guys, found out it was the 30A fuse that controls the headlights after it got dark tonight, lol

I assume this works as well if I just want to install a dome light from say a 2000. I can't stand the single lamp dome light on the 2011.
