Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
PIcked up a black one off a member here
Being my first time doing mods it took me a minute of staring at it and figuring out how the holes would line up lol....but it does indeed bolt right in to a 2001 edge 4dr. I did need a longer screw for the ground and had to cut off this plastic piece that was sticking up. If anyone needs to use a longer screw I just used a 4mm screw, my hobby is rc cars so I have all kinds of them and they are a perfect fit.
So much nicer!
Now for some buggman leds

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
Ok, i searched this whole thread and either missed or the answer to my question is not there... What is the Gauge of the green/orange stripe wire that i would need to T-tap into to add more wire? i saw someone mention the white one or something for the newer trucks is 20 gauge? Im just trying to figure out what size wire and Ttap to buy cause the smallest ttaps oreilly had were 14/16 gauge... and also does anyone have any recomendations on Ttaps vs the other wire taps like the one in the mod instruction pic? (solderless wire quick splice connectors is what amazon called them) Thanks.

I'm eyeballing it as roughly 20 gauge. Definitely within the 18-22 gauge of the red taps (Google "18-22 gauge tap" for example). As far as other connector suggestions, you'll be fine with these T-taps for inside-the-cabin use. Wrap them very securely with electrical tape though. The other way to go about connections is with a butt connector (google "18-22 gauge butt connector", and hope safe-search is on ).
As a brief FYI, wire connectors are color-coded. Yellow is for 10-12 AWG (gauge), blue for 14-16 AWG, and red for 18-22 AWG. The higher the AWG number, the thinner the wire. You probably already know all this but I just wanted to be crystal clear.

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
OVERHEAD DOME/MAP LIGHT FIXTURE: I HAVE A 02 XLT. Can I exchange my 3 bulb overhead light unit for a 2 bulb unit. It all looks the same except the 2 bulb unit has a long plastic piece molded to the back side of the light bulb fixture that prevents me from installing it. Can I simply cut the molded plastic off and move ahead with the installation of the 2 bulb unit?

^I agree. The mustang light looks like a tube. The Explorer light looks more natural.

Ok fellas im trying to swap out my dome light in my 2003 Ford Ranger Edge for a 2001 Ford Explorer Map/Dome light. When I take my old dome light off it has two wires one with just a black wire and one with different colored wires. From what I have read here and another fourm it should be just take the old one out and put the new one in. So I did that and nothing works. So I did some more research and found out the ground is a different screw hole on the explorer map light. Tried all holes and still get nothing. Can yall tell me how to get this thing working? I got pics but I guess this app does not let you post them.

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
Just an update: i used 18gauge wire that i got from radioshack and a red quick splice connector (not a ttap like i originally thought i was guna use) like the one in the picture from the original how to pics by stl (also from radioshack). I was redoing my headliner so it was easy to run the wires. Just another note, i got my dome light from a mustang at the junkyard mid to early 2000s i think? Idk for sure but on the dome light i got i had to cut off this piece of plastic sticking out in the back, it looked like it might of clipped in to a hole in the headliner of the mustang or something but i just cut it off with some angled wire cutters and then it fit. I have a single cab 2004 ranger btw. Another note: in order to get the wire i tapped from the green/orange stripe to my dome light i had to screw the bolt in from the back side of the mustang dome light (from the roof down towards the cab) because it was too long to screw in normally, it would hit the metal roof before screwing in completely and there was no hole that lined up for it to screw into. For most of you this wont make any sense i know but for anyone that happens to have the same problems i did, i hope this helps, sorry forgot to take pics, i was a little frustrated lol

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
Mine came out of a 2001 Explorer.... bolted up useing all three screws I didnt have to run a wire to it. I did have to do like you and cut the tab off the back so it would mount flush.... I have to say this makes a big difference the map lights shine perfect... all I got to do now is put LED bulbs in them. thanks for the guide it did help alot.
