Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
I registered just to say THANK YOU to the OP for posting instructions and wiring info.
I liked the style of the '94-'04 Mustang dome light and wanted to put one in my Cadillac limo.
For those installing the Mustang dome light in a switched-to-ground scenario (most non-Ford vehicles), you need to add a relay to supply 12V to the dome light when a door opens.
I found this out AFTER I bought a nice, black Mustang dome light for my Caddy.
I had to manufacture a wiring harness with a relay in it. The relay uses the factory constant-hot and the switched to ground to activate the relay and provide 12V to the Mustang light so that it illuminates when a door opens.
All done:
Sorry this isn't necessarily Ranger-specific, but others stumbling on this thread might find the info useful, particularly if you're installing the Mustang dome light in a non-stock location irrespective of the make and model of your vehicle.

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
if you have the wires with the contact points inside them. you are golden. the problem i had with mine is that i had to screw in the screw, hard. maybe put a small wire around the screw and screw it in that way?

I have noticed that no one asked this question....... No matter what year ranger can you only use certain year mustang dome lights? For example say I have a 2011 ranger, can I only use a new style mustang replacement (ex: 2010) or could I use one say from a 98? Would installation be any different using the 2010 over the 98. Sorry to get so technical. Hope this makes sense.

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
My dome light works with the passenger door, the dimmer control and just comes on for a second with the drivers door, I can't find a control button on the drivers door, so what controls the light from the door? I have a 2008 Ranger XLT, thanks

Is there any information on explorer dome/map lights being installed as a mod.....they seem a little more beefier and look nicer in my opinion. Does anyone know if they would fit right in...would it be the same process to wire it?

Just did the ford explorer dome/map light mod today. Looks great! For anyone considering doing this....I recommend the ford explorer swap over the mustang. The mustang dome light in my opinion is just a little to small....the explorer swap is more sleek and looks like a perfect fit!

Attempted to wire the explorer dome light this weekend with no luck. I should have seen this coming when I first installed it two weeks ago.
I ran the wire then went to install and wire the explorer dome light but noticed a problem. Two of the screw holes line up (the factory electrical hookup and another hole which I believe to be the ground) but the third one does not. (The third hole being the power source for the map lights?) Instead, there is a square cut out from factory where the third screw hole should be.
The regular dome light works, but the map lights wont because I cannot hook up the power wire that I ran under the steering column.
What do I do to get the map lights working? Please Help!!!

Re: 2004 and up Ranger to Mustang Dome Light Mod
See if you can solder to the map light power connections in the dome light housing directly. Scuff or lightly sand the brass, and use some flux when soldering. The map light should share the ground connection you already have.
