Decided to post this up as some of you might not want to repaint your flares and bumper valance and such with spray paint.
What you need:
-Masking tape (not needed if you are removing trim from truck)
-
Showroom New Restorer - Black
-Old
NON-GREASY towel, get a couple of them
- Latex gloves
-Cleaning solution (you can wash your truck, or get some like simple green to degrease the trim)
REMEMBER: this is a permanent dye, not a dressing, so if it gets on your clothes, you will be throwing them away.
Your trim needs to stay out of water or any solutions for about 6 hours, so either do this a day before you wash your truck, or wash your truck and then do this, but make sure when you wax it, you do not get any kind of wax on your trim
1. clean your trim and make sure it is fully dry
2. you can either remove the trim for your truck, or tape around. How I always tape is like this:
I place the tape on leaving about 1-2cm flopped over on the trim:
I then take either my fingernail or a plastic razor blade, and run it around the edge to ensure that the tape gets a nice clean line around the edge of the trim:
*This die is kind of cool in the sense that if you do get any on the paint, you can remove it very easily if it's fresh, the reason why I would tape around your flares and such is that they are a little large and by the time you get done with 1 coat the dye does try on your paint and it can be a little difficult to remove.
3. So now you're all taped up and ready to start dying.
4. Get your latex gloves on and your towel.
5. Pour a little of the dye on your towel and start rubbing it into the trim. Rub in small circles and reapply the dye on your towel as needed.
6. When you get done, let it sit for about 10 min, it should be dry by then. IF the finish still looks streaky (it might if it's still wet/drying), then apply another coat.
7. Remove tape and you're all done! Throw the towel away.
