Why? Here's a scenario. You stop for a drive thru burger after dark, park in the lot and turn the key to ACC to listen to the radio. You know what happens next - the Autolamps come on because the R/Y is hot in ACC. So, you reach down and turn the H/L switch off manually to keep the lights off while listening to the tunes. When you're ready to leave, then you have to turn the switch back on manually to make the "Autolamps" work! Kinda defeats the purpose if you ask me.
So, I later moved the mirror's red/yellow from the radio's "Hot in RUN/ACC" to a wire that is "Hot in START/RUN" like Ford originally did in the EX. My choice, believe it or not, was the red/yellow in the 2003 Ranger that powers a bunch of stuff in the dash when the key is in Start/Run. In a 2001~2003, you can pick up the R/Y at dash fuse 11 or several other places. Other years are likely to be different.
Caution: do not confuse this red/yellow with the heavy red/yellow at the headlight switch that is referenced elsewhere in this How-To.
|
This sounds like a great idea, but could you be a little more specific on where I can find a "Hot in START/RUN" wire in the dash?

Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer
I just went through and did this mod, buuuuuut it didn't work. My headlights definitely are not auto and my mirror doesn't dim at all. Aren't the words on the mirror supposed to light up as well?
I don't think I messed things up too much, as my headlights still work with the switch. Anyone have any ideas?

It varies by year. For 2001~2003, the red/yellow comes from fuse 11 and feeds the following:
Instrument cluster (connectors on back)
4WD module (if present)
Central Security Module (hidden by passenger airbag)
Generic Electronic Module (inside dash to the left of the radio)
Headlight switch (thin R/Y, not thick R/Y)
SInce you'd already be working with the wires to the headlight switch, it might be easiest to get the "Hot in start/run" R/Y there. Just be sure not to mix it up with the fat R/Y that carries the headlight load.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Small correction here. Should read "So, you reach UP and turn off the MIRROR switch manually to keep the lights off while listening to the tunes." I haven't had to mess with this problem for several years. LOL
I was thinking about this after I commented. If you are sitting parked, the auto lamps can be turned off by simply sliding the timer all the way to the left which will turn off the auto lamp feature
Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer
And that's what I did a few times before I began to question the wiring. After going to the trouble of modding the Autolamps into the truck, it just seemed wrong to have turn them off and then back on manually when parked and listening to the radio. Wiring the R/Y to the correct source gives you true Autolamps.
I agree with ya on that, no dispute here. Just figured on mentioning it as an alternative
Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer
Ok so update. I just checked out some stuff and tried to fix it. The auto dim mirror does work, I see the green light and I saw it dim when someone with brights on was behind me.
The headlights still do turn on, but I'm still not seeing any sort of auto feature. Am I supposed to leave the headlight switch on or off to see the affect?
Also, my lights behind my gauge cluster are not illuminating, could this be a related issue or is it just coincidental? I tapped into the r/y wire in the module to the left of the head unit (idk if this would be involved at all...)
Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer
It shouldnt be effecting the cluster. Your headlight switch should be in the off position. Check the interior dim switch in case that got turned down by mistake. Also the slide on the bottom of the mirror must be pushed to the right for the auto lamps to work, and that slide is the actual timer as well
Check fuse 33 in the underhood Distribution Box.
