Alright I checked all of the fuses both in the cab and in the underhood distro box, none of them were blown. The dimmer switch is maxed out. The slide is definitely to the right so it should work.

Any other ideas? I checked the wiring and things seem fine. I could live without the auto head lights, but I really need the instrument cluster to light up...

Does your wiring match this diagram?

Varies by year:

For 1995~ 2003, a common choice is green/yellow of the mirror tapped into green/orange serving the map lights. Even if the truck doesn't have maps, the wire is usually up at the dome connectors through 2003.

In the original Ex installation, red/yellow is hot when the ignition key is in is the RUN and START positions but not hot in the ACCESSORY and OFF positions.

Read back through this thread for more info.

We poured through this thread while trying to get it working. Kinda wish you had posted the diagram about 2hours earlier lol. Were starting to think his mirror is bad.

Ya that's the wiring I have going. I am not sure what's going on, but this is bad, I can't drive at night right now...does the module to the left of the head unit have anything to do with the cluster lights or hvac lights? For some reason I think the issue has got to be in there, but I'm not sure what that module is called so I can't get a wiring diagram to confirm.

Generic Electonic Module (GEM). It is doubtful that the GEM is causing the problem because the GEM uses the red/yellow as a power input, not an ouput. The GEM controls the interior courtesy lights but not the dash illumination.

The power for the dash lights passes through from the same Tan/White and Brown wires that get modded for the Autolamps so that would be a good place to look for possible connection problems. Also, be aware that when the dash illumination goes down, the exterior running lights (except headlights) usually do too.

Also check your splicing into the headlights, make sure that you spliced the thicker wires. Some are the same colors but you have to splice into the thicker wires

We didnt want to hook up the auto headlights with the HIDs (cause he usually just has them on anyways) or the reverse lights. Just the mirror.

Ok thanks for the input guys, hopefully I'll have some time to take a peek when I get home from work. I think I used the thick wires coming from the headlight, but it can't hurt to check. Good to know about the tan one, too, I'll triple check those connections. I didn't realize the running lights would go down, too, I haven't checked to see if that is the case.

I have a diagram but it needs some revision. I'll post it in the next few days.
