Default Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer

Well, a few questions here guys.

I recently picked an auto dim mirror from an 03 Explorer I belive it was, the wire colors are : Green/Yellow, Red/Yellow, Black/Pink, White/Black and Black for ground.

I do have an OHC installed in my truck, I am wondering to install the mirror with JUST the auto dim feature, no auto headlamps, how do I go about this?

Also the mirror does not fit on my windshield, how do I get around this safely? I did take the metal plug off the Explorer though. If that matters.

Edit: I figured it out, mounted the ground with my ohc bracket, the yellow/green to the map done light, and red/black to yellow/Grau OHC.

Thanks guys!

So im on the fence about this mirror install, I just got the ohc installed and still need to wire it but if I understand this right the mirror dims if someone has brights on behind you? Then it will leave your headlights on for a set time you chose? I read one guy didnt use this cause of hid's, is this bad for them?

I didn't connect the auto headlights on my mirror, just the auto dim. Also modded that function with a switch so I can have it on constant or off completely.
I like the way it dims & you don't need to flip the mirror up when some a-hole bright lights you from behind

Not sure how it would affect hid's, but as long as it doesn't turn them on/off frequently it should be ok.

I'm looking at doing this to my 1993. My only concern is, what would happen you have your headlight switch on and the mirror triggers the relay? Would this possibly create a short?

Also, If get motivated I'll post a diagram for the old dash trucks like mine.

So I have to tear apart my dash to get power for this auto dim mirror? Ughhh not what I wanted to do. Can I steal power from a different source? Maybe the dome light?

Ok, i'm getting ready to do this during the weekend. What would i have to do in order to make this work with the 02 wiring? I've already installed an OHC, and I will also be doing the Explorer visors with the lights in them. I just want to know what i will be running into with my 02's headlight switch.

you can get power from dome, all you really have to do is pull out the radio and bezel... A lot easier that way

well go ahead and knock out your relay wiring first. As far as the 02 headlight switch.. Just find the wiring diagram for it and spoke them in... It really isn't difficult at all. If you are using auto lamp, I suggest covering the sensor with black electrical tape. So you know it is working.

----------

I was busy at it for 3 days straight wondering why it wouldn't work, later realized was because of the sensor. Had to cover sensor so it would be as if it was dark.

Has anybody tried this on a 2007+ Ranger? I saw the post a couple pages back with someone who used a different relay for his 2010 and he hand drew a diagram for it with microsoft paint lol. But has anyone tried the 04-06 wiring method on an 07+? Looking forward to trying this on my 07 level ii but it seems nobody tried this on a ranger newer than 06.

I'm putting this in my '97. Saw a few mixed responses as far as wiring for just the auto-dim function. Can I just ground the black wire, and splice the green/yellow from mirror to green/orange from dome? Or do I need to wire the red/yellow from mirror to another wire as well?

Okay, so red/yellow is your hot in start/run. The green/yellow is constant hot.
