I have the same question.
I had read on another site that this can be accomplished by tapping into the white/violet wire on the RAPS. It said this was pin 8 on the module. You would still have to wire up a relay for the headlights (splicing the Dark Blue/Orange, and Red/Yellow Wire from the headlight switch), but you would just tap into this white/violet wire to trigger the parking lamps.
Supposedly this would keep the dinger from activating due to the auto lamps feature, but it would still ding in normal conditions like when you leave your keys in the ignition or when you the headlights switch is left on.

Can anyone verify this is true? Maybe elaborate or include pictures? I have only read this on 1 other (old) tread, and have not seen this brought up anywhere else.
Also, is the RAPS that was referred to the same as the GEM?

I'd rather bump this thread than start a new one. To the people who did this mod, did anyone else have the auto dim mirror shake like crazy compared to the old manual one?

I haven't done the wiring yet, it's only mounted, but it shakes like crazy at any speed. Does anyone have a solution?

Default Re: Auto dim mirror install from an explorer

I had this problem when I 1st installed mine. I ended up pulling the mirror apart, and there was a screw that held the tension of the connection and it needed tightened. It has been a while, but I think it was a large phillips head. The mirror comes apart around the seam. There are little plastic clips on one side that snap in behind the edge of the other. It took me a while, but I finally got it to go with a small flat head.
Mines actually started to shake a little again, not terrible like before, but enough to consider taking it apart again.
This worked for me, so I hope it helps. I have also heard of the base of the mirror not fitting the little metal mount on the window properly.

Awesome, thank u for the response. I took it apart and it was 8mm screw that I just a like quarter turn. Not sure if it helps but I wired everything up and works like a champ. Won't know about the shakes until I drive later

Mirror still shakes. Any other ideas or solutions on fixing this problem?

Sorry man. That's all I can think of. Like I said, I have heard of issues with the fit to the metal tab on the window that the mirror base slides over. I think they made different sizes of them depending on the year. Not positive on this though. It has been a while.

You can always hit up the JY and pick up another mirror. If you have everything wired in, it should just be plug and play. I would think you could pick another 1 up for like $10. Might be worth it to save you the hassle of troubleshooting it.

That's awesome you got it wired in. I never have finished wiring mine. I just wired in the AutoDim 1st, but have never been able to get it to work. I keep meaning to go back and pick up another one, but seems like I never make time too.

Ya that's a good point. I might just go pick up another one and if it shakes as well, then I can see what I can do about a wider metal tab for the window.

Ya u should wire it up. The features that come with the mirror are awesome. It only took an afternoon to do it, that included wiring, mounting, and troubleshooting lol.

For people who has installed the auto dim mirror, how well does it work? Are there times where it doesn't dim early enough or at all? Any annoyances?

Same on the auto headlamps, how well does the feature work?

Thanks!

I installed an autodim but didn't hookup the auto lamp because I think my mirror is messed up. The green light for the headlight auto lamp feature stays on for 3 minutes no matter where the adjuster is. And I love my auto dim. It dims when light hits it. Only think I don't like is if I turn the lights on inside the mirror dims and goes dark. But it's not a big deal. Also I have a camper shell and the light has to travel through 3 glass windows, 2 of which are tinted 10% tint. So when the slider windows are closed it doesn't dim because the tint dims the light a lot. But when they are open it does what it's supposed to do.

When I put my mirror on it shook. It wasn't all the way down on the metal tab I took a small hammer and tapped it till it was in place.

^^^^ Uh oh, I hadn't considered the tinted window thing. My rear door windows and the rear slider are tinted, Ford did that for me when it was built. I wonder what % tint they would use OEM..........

Mine are right at the legal limit. If yours are factory then they aren't that dark. With the one later of tint it's fine. Through the 2 layers and single non tinted window it doesn't. But otherwise it works even with tint.

Hello all I'm sitting in my truck now and I can't figure out why it's not working. I've checked all my connections, and the mirror. To the best of my knowledge everything is hooked up correctly. I noticed that the original instructions called for connecting the white/purple wires to post 85 of the relays where the diagram for 95-2003 rangers had the purple and white going to post 86. Could this be my problem? Please help, thanks to those who try

Your connecting the auto lamp? Do you see the switch on the mirror itself? Is it set at off?

I just happen to have one of those relays on my desk.......and 85/86 are both the coil, so it won't matter if you reverse them. You realize that the wh/purp wire leading to the mirror grounds the relay coil circuit to activate the lights and wired accordingly, right? Said another way, one side of the relay coil is wired to the wh/purp and the other is wired to hot (not a ground).

Thanks for your replies, yes I understand that the w/p wire grounds it. I see the switch, and I know that it needs to be to the right in order for this effect to work. I even took it apart to make sure that it was connected on the inside. My lights still work from the switch but the green light on the mirror doesn't light up indicating that it's receiving power.
