there is supposed to be another way you can hook up through your disc changer but shouldn't mess anything up although I can not guarantee it seeing that i have no experience with the disc changer
(I will have to see if i can find that way)

nope everything works exactly the same its just your mp3 input overrides the "silent signal"
any other cd and the cd input would probably out do your MP3 player signal
(if that makes any sense)

I took mine apart and found what I'm pretty sure is Rout and Lout, but damn those are some small holes. I don't have good enough soldering skills to make a good connection without soldering half the stupid board together.

After finally finishing everything Hooked everything back up and it sounded great no disruptions or anything. Definitely better than say a FM transmitter. or that cheap cassette deck I was using
this reply is really for those that have not yet gone the somewhat involved and technically difficult project. I went into my local Walmart,
YES, Walmart, and bought the $89 XHDR6435CD (model #) head unit with 100W power output, it looks like a very high $$$ unit with removable faceplate! It has ipod kookups, usb interface. And even has a remote control. The POINT I'm trying to make is for under $120 (including the mounting kit) you can have a very nice high powered high quality stereo.

that is always an option but the point of this mod is it is virtually free and some people (like me) don't have a hundred dollars to spend on a new radio. In the end it is always your choice what to do.

Yea I don't really use my ipod all the time; I tend to just burn cds. but if I can cheaply make an aux port, that would be sweet!

Recon, what gauge wire did you use? The holes in my circuit board were pretty small - maybe 1/32". I had trouble getting a good solder, and was wondering if I need a different tip for my soldering gun or smaller wire and smaller solder.

OK, thats what I had too...I guess either the holes in my board are smaller, or I'm absolutely horrible at soldering. I might give it another try this weekend though!

Hey all.

I'm only an hour new to your forum... but I thought I should add some info that I've discovered thanks to RECONJB's contributions.

I keep reading about people having difficulty with the 2005 xlt am/fm/cd base model radio. Although the procedure is exactly the same, the solder points are a bit harder to find... and smaller. But I followed the connection through the board and decided it would be easier to solder from the bottom of the amplifier board - just after the connection to the cd player (rather than the cd board).

EDIT:

I JUST ADDED A HOW-TO FOR THE 2005 XLT HERE (WITH GREAT PHOTOS):
Add AUX input for mp3 player or similar to: 2005 stock xlt am/fm/cd player

Have an adjustable soldering iron and use FLUX.

You will be amazed at how much easier it is to solder using it.

I'm going to be doing this as well over the weekend. I have an avic d3 sitting in the box from when I ended up with two of them.. one went in my car but I don't feel like putting it in the truck and getting it stolen with how easy it is to get into our trucks and how easy it is to just pull the entire radio bezel off..etc.

So there is no way at all to do this without having to use a blank cd with a silent song?

I wonder if this is the same deal ....

I like that he has it in the headunit.. makes for a clean install.

That is completely factory although if paid enough attention to details i'm sure you could do something very similar
