Default Gauge cluster question

Will a gauge cluster from a 3.0L 1992 ranger work in a 1991 4.0L ranger? Rebuilding a 1991 ranger and have noticed the temp gauge doesn't work. I grounded it and It does move the needle. Even still I replaced the coolant temp send unit. The voltage always shows low, like around the N in 'Normal' but I pulled the alternator and replaced the voltage regulator and checked the brushes which are almost new. Battery holds a steady 13.1 volts after running. The previous owners said their father had replaced the gauge cluster (not sure why). Also, the speedometer shows 50 mph when I am definitely going faster than that. All this combined makes me believe that maybe these gauges are motor specific, Yes? No?

Try swaping the sender for coolant, they probably react at diferent ohms. Verify your speed with a gps.
I put a cluster with tack from a newer ford explorer into my 97 3.0 ranger with no issues.

Default Re: Gauge cluster question

So, after some checking, even with good brushes and a replacement VR it shows the alternator is producing about 14 volts at idle, which is no Bueno. I'm guessing that low voltage has a lot to do with the gauge issues I'm experiencing. I used a gps speedometer app and found that I was roughly 5 mph faster than what the speedometer was showing (speedo showed 40, gps showed 45.2) and guess what? Turns out the tires on the truck are supposed to be 14", not 15". Hopefully my stupidity will help someone else on here.
