Default How To Add/Enable Auto Lock (1995-2003)

If you have a 1995-2003 with factory power locks then you should be able to enable/add this feature.

The 1995-2000 RAPS (Remote Anti Theft Module) and the 2001-2003 CSM (Central Security Module) are used in other vehicles Explorers and Sport Tracs and have a feature called Auto Lock. When you put your truck into drive and release the brake it automatically locks the vehicle.

Since your truck uses the same module, why can't you? Well it's not enabled from factory and you have to add two wires (one for brake signal and one for reverse signal). The logic is that the brake signal has to be active (12V) and the reverse signal has to go from open circuit to 12V (reverse) and then back to open circuit. Once the brake is released (grounds out the brake signal) the vehicle will lock.

To test to see if your RAPS/CSM can enable this feature follow the steps below:

Put the key in the ignition and turn it to on.

Press the Unlock button three times.

Turn the ignition off.

Press the Unlock button three more times.

Turn the ignition back to on.

The horn should beep once. This tells you that you’re now in programming mode.

Press the Unlock button, then press Lock again. The horn will beep once to tell you that Auto Lock was deactivated. It will beep twice if you’re reactivating the system.

Turn the ignition back to off and listen for the horn to beep one time confirming that the programming was accepted.

If this works out your next step is obtain two terminals from a junkyard RAPS/CSM pigtail. You need to get them from the 26 pin connector (larger one).

Next locate the RAPS/CSM in your truck:

Here is what it looks like:

1995-1999: rear of cab behind trim panels near floor

2000: RH kick panel

2001-2003: Behind passenger airbag.

Next remove the 26 pin (larger connector) and add terminals/wires to pins 12 (reverse signal) and pin 26 (brake pedal switch).

Pin 12 needs to connect to your reverse signal. Reverse is switched the neutral safety switch and goes through the engine harness, engine bay harness, dash harness, cab harness, bed harness. You can grab this signal anywhere along this path.

Pin 26 needs to go to the brake pedal position switch SIGNAL side. Only the signal side generates the ground signal when not depressed. See the picture below. The other output of the brake switch is for the brake lights only.

Note: this dual switch brake pedal switch was introduced in 1998. In 1995-1997 they just had a simple 2 wire switch (no ground when brake not depressed). I don't know if this will work on a 1995-1997 without adding a double pole relay where when energized gives a positive output and when de-energized gives a ground signal.

Okay! Had to go to the U-Pull this morning to get a couple of OEM caliper bolts. While there, I got a pigtail for the RAPS/CSM module. After finishing the brakes and giving it a bath, I sat down and watched your video again with pigtail and pick tool in hand. Those come out so easy when you know what to do! Got a BL/PK and GN/RD wire out of them. Tomorrow night I will pull my airbag and pop those wires into the 26-pin connector. I will take your advice and test function like you did in the video before wiring anything permanent. Video is great! Wifey loves your southern accent! LOL

Success!!! Removed the airbag and unplugged the CSM. Popped the two wires into pins 12 and 26. Tested for function and it worked like a charm! I soldered and shrink tubed a paired cable to the wires and ran it over to under the drivers side dash. Once that was in place, my son pulled out his VOM and he found the wires to tap into. My BL/PK wire from the auto dim mirror gave us the signal we needed for reverse and the brake pedal was a no-brainer. Two tee-taps later, it was installed. Tested it for initial lock and then passenger door open and re-lock. One difference in operation is that on my 2003, it appears the CSM talks to the VSS signal somehow, as it waits until you are moving 3 to 7 MPH to actually lock the doors. Simply lovin' it!

Anthony, I cannot thank you enough for your research, effort and help on this project! If I am EVER in Hoover, Alabama... I will take you out for a steak dinner!

Glad I could help. Man I wished mine waited until it saw speed. So did you do a test like I did and it did nothing?

Actually, I am a bit confused. When we did the test like you did in the video, doors locked immediately. Once the wiring was complete, it acted differently and the truck had to start moving before the doors locked. I will see how it acts tomorrow when I head to work.

Hmmmm. I haven't hooked up mine to the truck wiring yet, but now you have me intrigued.

Update: Got in my truck for work. Started, reversed out of the driveway, dropped it in Drive, released the brake and CLICK! It was immediate. Not sure what was up last night unless it was confused with all the different things we were doing (lock/unlock/reverse/park/PS door open, etc). We will continue to monitor its behavior. Still lovin' it!

So I did some more research using owners manuals and how they word the feature. Look at the difference between a 1998 explorer and a 2000 model. 1998 sounds like gear change but the 2000 sounds like it's speed related. Both use RAPS. My unit is 98 Explorer unit, may try to obtain a 2000 and see what it does.

Whether gear change or speed related, I love the feature!

Well, leaving work it again locked as soon as I let off the brake when in drive. At a four way stop, I opened the passenger door and when I took off they locked again. I am thinking last night was a fluke and that gear change is the way it works for this truck.

I'm wondering if you were slowing taking your foot off the brake and letting the truck idle up to about 3-5 mph. That brake switch activated with the slightest touch to the pedal.

Very possible. At any rate, the project is a huge success! Thinking this mod should be made into a sticky!
