Default How To: Remote Start

So I just finished installing an Avital 4103 1-Way Remote Start with an Xpresskit PKALL bypass into my automatic 2000 ranger. The following guide is ONLY for the remote start portion of the kit and is specific to my 2000 Automatic 4.0 4x4 Ranger. Other year rangers will be 98% similar but I imagine there will be slight differences.**I'll be including the wiring for the door locks in the future as the OEM key fob will not unlock the doors if the truck is locked and remote started**

The items needed for the install:
* Avital 4103 (or any other kit that is compatible with a ranger)

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Avital-Av...103LX/41378026

* Xpresskit PKALL (or any other bypass that is compatible with a ranger)

https://www.amazon.com/Directed-Elec.../dp/B001N7RE44

* wire strippers (I prefer these https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-1...wire+strippers because I can pull back the jacket with ease)

* assortment of wire terminals, butt connectors, and crimpers/OR soldering iron and solder, electrical tape

* 1 OEM key if 1998-2000 ranger OR 2 keys if mid-July 2000-2011 ranger for programming bypass module

* wiring diagrams (the diagrams I used are posted below but different year rangers will be different. Start your search with the websites below)

Bulldogsecurity:

* Lastly, you need TIME and PATIENCE. oh, and to be able to lay in an uncomfortable position for 5 minutes at a time

First things first, we need to sort out the wires on the harnesses.

Let's start with the PKALL bypass module as it is has the fewest wires. There are 2 wire harnesses: one 6-wire harness and one 4-wire harness. The 6-wire harness is what gets connected to the ignition barrel anti-theft wiring as well as some ignition wires. The 4-wire harness brings power to the bypass module. I DID NOT use the 4-wire harness as a D2D so I had to make some required cuts shown below:

The PKALL vehicle fit guide says we need to use the Connection 3 ignition barrel diagram. I looked at my ignition barrel and realized that the connector looks exactly like Connection 2 instead of the specified one in the guide so I wired the connection up for Connection 2. The required wiring is as follows:

To access the ignition barrel 3 screws must be removed from the bottom steering wheel trim piece. The connector of interest will be green as follows:

The Connection 2 wiring will show what pin corresponds to what on the ignition barrel connector. Make sure you check which wire color corresponds with what pin. The only wires of interest in this harness will be the TX and RX data wires. **The pins may be reversed so don't make any permanent connections until bypass is programmed.

PKALL
6-pin Harness
PURPLE/WHITE goes to RX (DATA IN)
YELLOW/BLACK goes to TX (DATA IN)
**Again these may need to be reversed
BLUE/WHITE goes to BLUE (-) 200mA STATUS OUTPUT of Remote Start Satellite Harness
GREEN is not used (can cut and tape)
PINK goes to PRIMARY IGNITION CIRCUIT (I tapped into the PINK wire of the Remote Start 6-pin harness)
BLACK is not used (can cut and tape)

4-pin Harness
*you can try programming by simply plugging the ends of the connector into their corresponding inserts but I had to make cuts mentioned above
PIN 1 (may be RED or BLUE) goes to a (+)12V source (I tapped into one of the RED (+) (30A) HIGH CURRENT 12V INPUT wires of the Remote Start 6-pin harness)
PIN 3 BLACK goes to a GROUND (I tapped into the BLACK GROUND wire of the Remote Start 9-pin harness

Those are all of the connections needed for the bypass. Programming instructions will in the PKALL manual. I have nothing to add to those instructions other than doing the process fast. Faster than you'd expect.
My wiring for the bypass looked like this:

To access wiring under the dash you need to do this (from bulldogsecurity):

Next is the remote start module. It looks like this:

There will be FIVE harnesses and an antennae with a plug. Mount your antennae and route your antennae wiring back under the dash. I chose here:

Next up is the 4-pin Satellite Harness.
BLUE (-) 200mA STATUS OUTPUT goes to (-) BLUE/WHITE of PKALL 6-pin connector
ORANGE (not used, can cut and tape)
PURPLE (not used, can cut and tape)
PINK (not used, can cut and tape)

Next is the 9-pin Main Harness.
An alarm is not being installed so only THREE wires are of interest here.
BLACK Ground goes to a solid chassis ground point. *I used this wire as the main ground because it's the heaviest gauge. All other grounds are tapped into this wire to reduce clutter.
WHITE (+/-) LIGHT FLASH OUTPUT goes to either WHITE PURPLE (-) or BROWN (+) con king off of the headlight switch. *I used the BROWN (+) wire as shown below:

BROWN (-) 200mA HORN OUTPUT goes to the YELLOW/LIGHT-GREEN wire found in the kick panel as shown below:

*I did NOT install this wire because it is in a harness that involves air bag wires. This wire is really only needed if you're installing an alarm or want to be able to get programming confirmation of the Avital module.

Next is the 6-pin Remote Start connector. ALL wires will be used here. You will be tapping into the wires of this connector on the vehicle:

RED (+) (30A) HIGH CURRENT 12V INPUT goes to YELLOW (+)
*There are TWO of these wires
PINK/WHITE OUTPUT TO SECOND IGNITION/ACCESSORY CIRCUIT goes to BLACK/LIGHT-GREEN (+)
ORANGE OUTPUT TO ACCESSORY CIRCUIT goes to GRAY/YELLOW (+)
PURPLE OUTPUT TO STARTER CIRCUIT goes to RED/LIGHT-BLUE (+)
PINK OUTPUT TO PRIMARY IGNITION CIRCUIT goes to LIGHT-GREEN/PURPLE (+)
*I used butt connectors here but if I did it again I would simply strip some covering exposing the wire and use solder to make a connection.

Lastly, we have the 5-pin connector.
I chose NOT to use the hood shut down pin, and rangers do not have any accessories such as a rear defogger so only THREE wires are needed here.
BLACK/WHITE (-)NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH INPUT goes to CHASSIS GROUND
*this is the case for automatics. Manuals will have to find this wire.
VIOLET/WHITE TACHOMETER INPUT WIRE goes to TAN/WHITE (AC) at Ignition Coil
*this wire must be fed through the firewall and connected at the ignition coil like so:

Others methods of tapping into this circuit are available but I won't go over them.
BROWN (+)BRAKE SHUTDOWN INPUT WIRE goes to LIGHT-GREEN (+) found in the kick panel shown below:

*this is the hardest wire to tap into because you have twist your body. This wire makes the truck turn off if someone were to try and steal the vehicle and there wasn't a key in the ignition.

The following pictures show my somewhat messy install and mounting location of the modules:

That is all that is necessary for the remote start from what I can tell. I am by no means an installer but the preceding process worked for me. I'll be adding the door lock part sometime in the future. Feel free to ask any questions.

I finished the door locks yesterday which was an absolute bitch.
Here's the door boot which is very hard to work with:

Here's the access hole to the door boot where you'll have to feed the wires to/from:

In the door boot there will be two wires of interest.

PINK/YELLOW goes to the GREEN Door Lock wire of the 3-pin connector.
PINK/GREEN goes to the BLUE Door Unlock wire of the 3-pin connector.
*The Avital Key fob Lock/Unlock buttons will now be able to function while the vehicle is remote started. The doors will also lock/unlock at the same time (ONE press) instead of the driver-then-passenger (2 press) way with the OEM remote.

YES thank you for this!!!

I finally got three working keys and always wanted remote start.

I am wondering however how my install is going to be difference since I installed an avital 2101 keyless entry (added power door locks, no buttons inside just using the keyless fob), and on my unit there is a spare trigger that can do something. I gotta figure out how to use my avital remotes (which look identical to yours) to trigger the remote start.

I might update if I proceed to possibly help others who might be in the same situation. There isn't that much info like this posted so it's nice to see a thread about remote start!

Thanks,
-Nigel

I also posted on 12v forum and got some information. Once I get all my parts I will add to this thread since there isn't a lot of info on the remote starts.

This doesn't seem all that bad to be 100$ honest. A lot of wires are not needed in our application. I went with the stand along Avital 4003L remote start since I have an Avital 2101 keyless entry system that I added to my manual locks two years ago. That's worked great! I also ordered the above Xpress module as it seems the best for our application. No firmware to load...etc. My kit has the D2D connection so I will be utilizing that, which will take some of the mess out.

I plan on de-pinning and removing all unused wires just so it's less clutter.

Any questions feel free to ask! There was a member on here who really helped me out (nopwcb). I don't know if he's still active but I couldn't have finished the install without his advice.

Actually have one question:

Quote:
Next up is the 4-pin Satellite Harness.
BLUE (-) 200mA STATUS OUTPUT goes to (-) BLUE/WHITE of PKALL 6-pin connector
ORANGE (not used, can cut and tape)
PURPLE (not used, can cut and tape)
PINK (not used, can cut and tape)
Why did you use the BLUE (-) 200mA STATUS OUTPUT goes to (-) BLUE/WHITE of PKALL 6-pin connector? When I posted on 12vforum I was informed I wouldn't use the 4-pin satellite harness at all, and to not even plug it in.

Just wanted to get clarity really quick so that I understand why that was connected if you remember?

This is what I was told about the 4 pin satellite harness
Quote:
The "satellite" outputs are (-) triggers that mimic the control to the internal relays for START, IGN, ACCY and "FLEX"(pink/white). These triggers can be used for additional relays if required. Such as if you wanted to power the third ACCY in your Ranger, you would use an external relay and trigger it with the orange "satellite" output. I did one installation where I put the module under the center console. Rather than run heavy gauge wires for 6+ feet, I put micro relays under the dash and triggered them with the satellite triggers. Works great. You don't need them, so just save the little 4-pin harness for later.
Note that my remote start is a 4003L which is pretty much the same as what you installed. I got the same exact Xpress bypass so that's identical which is good especially with this DIY thread!

Thanks again,
-Nigel
