So the diode is only necessary if we want to put a switch on the circuit to turn them on without the reverse lights?

Would these diodes be the same ones you could get at radioshack?

Yes. Simple diode, same as you'd find in most power supplies. Radio Shack. Etc. For example (random search at RS):
