Thumbs up Cleaning the MAF to get better MPGs

Hey Guys,

So I wanted to clean my MAF sensor since the truck was neglected before I got it, so I made a how to video in case you would like to do the same. I tried to back up my results with some OBDII sensor readings before and after and all I noticed was a lower rpm at idle which is pretty good in my book. I also have gotten 1.5mpg better on my first tank of gas after this replacement.

**Let me know what you think and if the video was helpful, give it a “thumbs up” on YouTube (it helps me out, thanks)***

When I got home last night, I was actually thinking "Damn check engine light is on again. I don't think I cleaned the MAF sensor properly last time. Gonna look for another guide on it and try agai--oh, what have we here?"

The universe is being nice to me for once. Thanks for the vid, man!

Good video! I'd suggest lining up the arrows on the sensor and the tube when you put it back on. I went a step further and took my throttle body off and cleaned that as well the back of the TB was really dirty.

What does lining up the arrows do?

You are not supposed to clean the throttle body. There is a sticker on it saying not to use throttle body cleaner or anything because there is a protective coating. Obviously if your throttle body is gummed up, the coating is gone, but if it is fine, then you should leave it. How did you clean it?

I cleaned with some throttle body cleaner(can't remember) and wiped it clean. I haven't ever heard or seen it say it is bad to clean the throttle body.

The throttle body has a non stick polymer coating on it from the factory that helps seal when the throttle is closed. It eventually wears away over the years/miles.

Very helpful. But did not solve all the rough idle problem. Just cleaned the idle control sensor and seems better. We will see..

Exactly. If your throttle body looks clean, the polymer is doing its job and you shouldnt clean it.

Followed the instructions. Easy to perform and gave my truck a little more pep on the go peddle.
