How To: Recondition your stock aluminum wheels without sandpaper! wheels
I had some severely corroded aluminum wheels on on of my project trucks. I didn't have any good spare wheels laying around so I decided to recondition them. I'm not much into the sanding wheels method so I did it without sandpaper!!! It's still a lot of work but I did mine in about 8 hours... Here's my solution....
First strip the wheels of the clearcoat.
Next clean out all the grooves and recesses with a stripper wheel.
I painted the grooves with silver to provide a stock appearance but any color could be used. I also did not mask the wheels off and cleaned the over spray with thinner instead while it was still fresh.
Next I used an oscillating sander with fine grit paper to remove the corrosion.
Next I used my stripper wheel to provide a uniform finish on the whole wheel.
For the first polish I used a "well used" scotch bright type wheel and Blue Magic metal polish.
Next I used a modified angle grinder and the same Blue Magic polish.
The shine is coming back
Th finish the job I used the angle grinder and some Mothers polish.
