Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
You should always start threading the spark plugs by hand. You might be able to use a thread chaser or a tap to clean the first few threads. If you have AAA, have it towed to your mechanic. Good luck!

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
You can drive without one spark plug for a few miles, you will obviously feel less power and so on but for say 15 or so miles you should be fine.

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
Thanks guys. It sounded really loud when I turned it on, so I quickly just turned it off and used my AAA to tow it. Luckily the mechanic is only 1.5 miles away. Didn't want to mess it up any more so had the mechanic do the new thread. I finished the rest of the plugs by just using my hands until they were snug, then the ratchet wrench and did the rest good. Then took it to the mechanic and he put in a new thread.
Learned from my mistake, and it still cost less than paying for a tuneup, including the work the mechanic did.
Once again, thanks for the how-to. Definitely wont be doing that again and learned from my mistakes.

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
Does the silicone stuff only go on the distributor end?
One thing I've used for starting hard to reach plugs is a vacuum hose(or similar) which fits onto the plug tip enough to turn it. The plug should start easily without binding, if not, back it up until it drops into the groove and start again

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
I'd really like to know about the silicone stuff, the last sets of wires I've bought they also included(or recommended) it. I kind of presumed it went on both ends, but this whole thread hasn't mentioned it?

Yeah, I use it.
It's actually dielectric grease – It helps seal the boot from moisture & water intrusion. Plus, it makes the boot a little easier to remove when the time comes, but its main benefit is the moisture prevention.
A little on each end of each wire smeared around the inside of the boot is all that is needed.

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
Thanks Logan. Actually I thought it was like a silicon, which dried and sealed, as well as stuck it together. I appreciate that info. I need to pull my plugs and see what they're looking like.

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
Is it possible to change the passenger side plugs on a 99 4.0 without removing the wheel?

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
I took mine off my ranger without removing the wheel. My truck is lifted though so I think it gives me a bit more clearance. However, it is a bitch to do it and is 100x easier when I removed the wheel and the inside fender/mudguard.

Re: How to: Install new plugs (4.0 V6)
Just finished changing my plugs 2006 4.0L. The center on the passenger is a pain. I pulled the boot off from the top, got it lose thru the wheel well then finally unscrewed from the top, and also put the new plug in from the top, back to the wheel well to tighten

Yes if you go in from the top but it Sucks you will look like you fought a cat afterward I now always take the tire off to do the passenger side plugs so much easier I use a 2.5 ton floorjack to lift the truck

Just out of curiosity, is that a homemade forced air induction system I see hooked up ? If so, how did you do it? Thanks

I know I'm a bit late on this and I doubt anyone will see it. But in the off chance that you do would you be able to tell me about how much it would cost for new plugs, wires and coil packs? I drive a 2000 4.0 efi
