Coolant Freezing Temp Check (For upcoming winter)
Hey guys, so I just published my latest How-to video on checking the coolant freezing temp. It just hit below freezing in the NE so I figured this would save some people headaches from improper coolant:water ratios.
Let me know what you think!
If you like the video, hit the "thumbs-up" button on youtube. It helps me out, thanks!!!

Re: Coolant Freezing Temp Check (For upcoming winter)
Good vid, but why does the 50/50 one only go to +5F. It should be lower than -30F and the 25% one is off also.

Thanks!
It makes sense if you think about it. Lets say the pure one is about -40F and water is 32F so:
-40+32 = -8
-8/2 = -5 which is pretty close to 5F (i cant imagine this gauge has great accuracy when the temps scale is about 15F).
So it is reasonable. Remember the average is taken with +32F not 0F
I wish I had something more accurate to test the coolant

Re: Coolant Freezing Temp Check (For upcoming winter)
I picked up a anti freeze tester at Walmart for under $2. I used 50/50 and it reads minus 25.

Close enough. 50/50 should protect to -34 in theory.

Am I missing something? Your test result for 50/50 should have come out to -34F. Yours came out to +5.....what part of that do you not understand as being inaccurate?
You asked for a review of your video. I gave it to you. The video was very good. The info was wrong.

Re: Coolant Freezing Temp Check (For upcoming winter)
50/50 mix of Prestone and water results in a solution that freezes at -34*F. Back when I was in engineering school I took a metallurgy class, the subject of depressing freeze points when two different substances was brought up. So as I read this, it comes as no surprise whatsoever that the freeze point is not +5*F for a 50/50 mix, and that a super strong mix of coolant and water, say 90/10 (90 being coolant) doesn't result in a significant drop over the 50/50 mix. Pushing the science aside and getting to the point is pretty simple, the 50/50 mix or thereabouts produces the best result for the money. Also, you don't want weak coolant, coolant contains corrosion inhibitors (they create a chemical reaction, they fizzle with time and no more protection), don't skimp to save $ short term.
OP maybe do a quick test mixing a few actual blends then show in video, Just a thought.

Dude, I am asking where you are getting your -34F from??? I gave you the math (already commented above) which makes perfect sense. I dont get what you are saying... If you are going to say something is wrong, you have to prove it and you havent done that... I dont want you to think I am upset or anything, just confused...

Good info. So the prestone 50/50 is where modelageek is getting his -34 temp number from. I didnt know that because this is Dexcool which has a higher temp... Maybe I will make another video comparing antifreezes... Gotta get some other videos done first tho lol

:what id you look at the graph on the back of your Dex cool jug. I believe it says 50/50 =-34 and 70/30=-84?.....

I had the unplanned delight of doing some cooling system work over the last two weeks; I was reminded again what's printed on the Prestone jug which is 50/50 = -34*F. I don't know where modela got his info, but me, I DO know about dexcool and what it did to many GM cars; after that ugly train wreck why would anyone want to place any confidence in that coolant? If you're not familiar do some very quick research and you'll be reading about corroded gaskets and gooey, jello like chit clogging intakes thanks to dexcool. Nice way to treat your customers GM, no wonder you're a company in decline since ~1979. Really, just use Prestone and you'll be fine.

Ok, i am starting to feel sorry for you. Something is obviously wrong.
I am getting my info off the back of your Dexcool jug. Please take a picture of the back of your Dexcool jug and post it.

Why anyone would ever put the orange death in a car is beyond me. My owners manual in my Pontiac vibe calls for Dexcool. It is a toyota engine. It came from the factory with toyota pink. ...GM is even confused about Dexcool ...you can't fix stupid.

Dude. Work with me. In the video you made did you say that when you tested the 50/50 cup that it read +5F. YES or NO
Now go to the back of your concentrated Dexcool jug, there is a small chart on it. read to me what a 50/50 ratio of Dexcool and water should protect to.
