Hey Guys,

Here is my newest "How To" video, How to Change Rear Differential Fluid. This is definitely some good preventative maintenance at about 100K miles. I will be making a shorter version that goes over the basics. This is the in-depth one. The idea is after watching this video, anyone can do this job.

Too bad the oil change places don't do it your way. All they do is snake a rubber tube into the pumpkin through the fill hole and pump it out.....of course all the crap on the bottom is still there.

off topic, but have you guys seen the rear diff fluid change how to on youtube where the guy used an impact wrench to reinstall the cover? lol, he sheared a bolt & cussed a little bit haha

Yea I know, right... I might have to do that for the front diff, but when you do the rear diff, you can see where all the old oil can lay without getting sucked up!



Crazy! I learned to torque things when I was a kid. I use to just tighten stuff as hard as I could and it would break something or make it impossible to take off again lol

He's using a Hatbor freight electric impact to tighten a diff cover... That right there is enough to tell you he's lucky if he has a room temperature IQ

I just redid mine after putting about ten thousand miles on my 8.8 swap .. Wanted it to get nice and flushed out then a good fluid swap with the correct additive package again. After draining it was very clean inside with just a wipe out with coffee filters. I sprayed the internals down with some Chemex and everything looked great. Inside of cover cleaned up great. Prepared gasket surfaces with razor blades and steel wool, new gasket with grey permatex right stuff and a coat of flat black on the cover and everything is lovely. Diff locks up great, I was considering a rebuild with ford racing clutches but this is good for now. Eventually will do an expo open 4.11 rear with an Aussie locker

I looked up the torque values in all data. When I'm back to the house ill post them for anyone who is interested.

I just made a shorter version for those who want an overview instead of the in-depth version. More than half is cut out (a lot harder to cut stuff out than put stuff in lol)!

Observations, excluding what's been noted:

a) Enough Permatex was used here to do two, maybe three RE covers. Permatex should also be placed in the middle of the faying surface flange on the cover. Doing it as shown surely resulted in excess sealer being expelled on the inside of the rear end, which will come off and circulate through the gears along with the oil.

b) Per the Ford factory service manual, the sealer also goes around the bolt holes on the cover.

c) Cover should have been tightened up by alternating tightening of fasteners on opposite sides of the cover and repeating this, and not by starting at a fastener, then tightening the next one to that, repeat, repeat.

d) If possible, it's not a bad idea to let it sit overnight, then before filling the next day, retorque the fasteners.

Thanks for the info. For your A and B, I did put a little too much but it wasnt much to cause any problems. Because I put extra, I thought it would be best not to put it around the holes but I wasnt completely sure so that is def a good tip, thanks! For your C and D I did that in the video lol...

My truck isnt that bad, you should see the other trucks here! I coated the whole underside with bed liner to prevent rust. The shock tower covers are rusty so not any of the important pieces. That is what salt does! Thanks for the video comment!!!
