Default Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Switch Flashing air bag light 2-7

If the air bag light on you dash is flashing 2-7 then the bulb is likely burnt out on the passenger side on/off switch. Here is how to spend $3.00 and replace it instead of $96.85 from Ford.

The illustrations are pulled from my ford ranger service manual. My console (full length) holds my switch. These are the instructions on removing it for both.

Tools Needed:
Needle Nose Pliers
Flat blade screw driver
Soldering gun
Soldering wire
Ratchet
8mm socket
New bulb from Radio Shack

I got this bulb from Radio Shack for $2.78 part number 272-345 in red they also have a green one 272-334

Step 1:
Disconnect the battery

Step 2:
Remove floor console

Full length console
Remove tray liner

Remove screws in cup holders

Step 3:
Remove the ash receptacle bracket(non full length console style)
Remove ash tray Remove the ash receptacle bracket. Remove the retaining bolts.

Full length console remove push pins down by floor on each side.

Step 4:
Full length console only.

Lift up on the back of the front section to access the plug

Step 5:
Disconnect switch plug

Full length console Once disconnected pull cover out of truck

Step 6:
Remove Switch cover

Step 7:
Remove Switch from cover

Full length console

Step 8:

Go ahead and plug in your soldering gun

Step 9:

Remove clear cover that says "off"

Step 10:
Remove center section from outer shell

Step 11:
With flat blade screw driver carefully open the box by pressing in on the tabs

Step 12:
Remove circuit board from housing.

Step 13:
Flip board over and hit the solder on the board with the gun to melt it off. While it is liquid like pull the existing bulb out. May need to use needle nose pliers to pull by the wire. It is easier to expose the existing holes. So the new lights wires can go through the holes.

Step 14:
Once old bulb is removed. Place new bulb in with the wires going though the holes. Lay down a small amount of solder onto the wires.

Step 15:

Reinstall the board into the housing. Line up the light so it is visible through the window.

Step 16:
Now take just the board to the truck and plug in to make sure it works.
If it is not working the wires are not making good enough contact with the board.

Step 17:
Reinstall everything back in reverse order of this how to. Enjoy saving a lot of money.

Without air bags the system should still throw a fault code when it does its BIT unless you put in the dummy plug.

Just fixed my airbag 2 7 code with this fix. Total cost $3.15 -- Very cool. This forum has already saved me hundreds and I've only had my truck for 2 months.

I love this forum. My light just started to flash and I thought I would need to have the airbag system looked at. This just saved me a ton of $$$$ from going to the dealer!

Ok, i just put in an explorer full center console and bucket seats....my air bag light on my cluster just started flashing now and wont quit, i think its the 2-7, which means the bulb is burnt out??? Wonder why this just happened as i was doing all this swapping and working in my truck?
Good write up, will have to tear mine apart and try to fix...hopefully i can find the right replacement bulb.

Pal, since you have lots of schemmes and diagrams, maybe you can help me.

My truck, a 96 XLT has driver airbag only, and Id like to replace the dummy plate for the passenger airbag.

Behind that dummy plate, I found the wiring for that airbag, connected to a "bypass" connector; offcourse if I unplugg that connector, the airbag lights flashes.

I have a brand oem PAD switch, and Im sure my truck is prewired for the passenger airbag. Must be, otherwise, why the hell behind the dummy plate is that wiring with the false conector???

My question is; do you know ir do you have a wiring schemme for the passenger airbag harness? Where could I find -if exists- the connector for the PAD switch?

Thanks so much for the tutorial! The hardest part was removing the PAD switch from my '99 Ranger and accessing the circuit board. I bought the lamp for $2.13 with sales tax at the local Radio Shack and went over to my dad's house for the soldering work. Cheap and easy fix for the flashing air bag light and without having to reset!
