Question Loose steering

I have a 1996 2wd and I just replace the tierods in and out the shocks and the sway bar bushings and it line up.The steering is really loose. There is a hollow sound coming from the drivers side when you make turn. There are no control arms and the ball check out ok.So before I start looking at the gear box is there any thing else I should look at? What kind of job would it be to get the box out? Also if I go to a boneyard to get a box what do I look for and check to hopefully get a good one?
