Default noisy steering wheel

it just started but when i turn my steering wheel theres a pretty loud squeaking/rubbing sound. what is causing the noise? is it just low on power steering fluid? and if thats the case is that a pretty inexpensive fix

thanks

mine does that too when its cold out, but its in the steering column. I think its just the shaft rubbing against the rubber gasket

...that sounds funny... lol

I don't know how the newer horn contacts work, but in my 90 bii they had two pins that floated against a contact disk on the back of the steering wheel. When the lubricate would dry up they would squeak when you turned the wheel, almost a kind of groaning sound. Just lubed them and no more noise.

Mine does it too, I think it just sounds like the gasket, it only does it at a certain point, I don't notice it anymore and the steering is still fine on mine. So don't fix what isn't broken for me lol Steering columns can be a bitch

You have to remove the steering wheel. The contact disk is at the back of the wheel facing the column. Remember I'm talking about a 90. Newer Rangers with airbags may be different. The noise isn't consistent, that's why it was so annoying. I just happened to find it when I was testing a mustang steering wheel on it.

I know this thread is pretty old but there isn't much on the topic. My 06 just started doing this to since it just started getting really cold. Its like a plastic rubbing sound from the column when I turn the wheel. I guess maybe because its cold but still it gets annoying. Did anyone ever find a solution?

Turn the stereo up lol

Lol otherwise nope, mine still squeaks, sounds like the best thing to do is just get in there and grease things. It's not loud enough that it ever bothers me.
