I have a 1992 Ford Ranger Pickup and the temperature gauge keeps going hot, then it
cools. What could it be? I've made sure the antifreeze was filled. I'm no mechanic, but I don't want to get ripped off.

are you sure it's even getting hot? could be a faulty reading, are the other guages reading high at the same time, like the gas and oil guage.Could be the small voltage regulator that controls them..

thermostat, Have this checked first, or at least it is the first thing I would have changed.
With a little bit of time and money, you could change it.
Just do your homework, their are not normally hard to change.

It is normal for a car to get hot but then the coolant kicks in and cools it down. So, if that is what ia happening your fine.
As long as the gauge cools down everything is fine and normal. But how hot does the gauge go? Does it go all the way up before it goes down? Or, does it just to go the middle and then go down?
In the middle is fine and as long as the gauge cools down, everything is fine.

been there
I've had the same issue with my 92. Every time I turned on the heater motor the temp gauge went up. I changed the water pump and went through 4 or 5 thermostats and flushed the system several times and nothing changed. I checked the water temp with a hand held gauge and found that the water temp was well within specs. It was just the gauge giving me a false reading. The top hose was hot and the lower one was just warm. Try a new gauge if all else fails.

try just bleeding the coolant lines. it's much les invasive than replacing the thermostat. if there's an air bubble trapped around the thermostat, it wont open untill a much higher temp. if ya dont know how, find a buddy that does. it's too simple a procedure to bring it in anywhere.

Re: I have a 1992 Ford Ranger Pickup and the temperature gauge keeps going hot, then
Sounds like I am having the same problem with my Ranger -- malfunctioning temperature gauage.
I have a 2011 xlt extended cab with a 2.3l 4 cylinder. the truck is great... I put 120,000 miles on it in under a year. But about a month ago the temperature guage started malfunctioning. for what ever reason -- the truck is NOT over heating-- the guage would increase past the "H" and then the temperatue light would come on. Because the truck thinks it's overheating -- the engine goes into a "safe mode" and runs with no power. When i shut the motor off and turn it back on temperature guage resets and the truck will run fine. Then in another 50 or 100 miles it will do it again. Why is it doing this? I took it to the dealer here in Columbus, Ohio and the mechanic installed a new termostat and a new "control modulator" (a $700+ part -- not really sure what it is called) anyway, the truck is doing the same thing and the mechanic still does not know why the truck is acting like this --
What did you guys do to fix this problem?
