Smell of gas?
Hello,
I have a 1996 Ranger XLT that has developed a problem. When I fill the gas tank, I smell gas outside the truck until the gas gauge goes down to about 1/4 of a tank. Would there be a reason that there is a strong smell of gasoline when the tank is full compared to 1/4 tank or less. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Re: Smell of gas?
Leak? Possible the pressurized cap is'nt holding pressure anymore and is releaseing fumes. Just guessing.

Re: Smell of gas?
You may want to park your truck over a nice clean dry garage floor, and then let it sit for an hour and see if you notice any drips of fluid dripping from your trucks fuel tank area, fuel filter, and certainly your engine compartment area.Start it up for a few minutes then shut it off and see if you see any fuel dripping.Just take your time and do a thorough inspection. Be sure to do this with a full tank of fuel.Good luck.

Re: Smell of gas?
also make sure it isnt leaking when you're fueling...could be a hole in the gas filler neck (whatever its called) When the gas is pumping, look under the truck.

Re: Smell of gas?
I know this will sound crazy but I had the same problem and it was the valve stem on the fuel rail. I only found it by shining a flashlight on the intake manifold. Lots of gas from a little leak. It only leaked when I filled the tank and I have no reason why. Easy fix by putting a tire valve stem cap on it. No more problem. BTW, I used a metal cap with a rubber seal, and it's been fine for over six months.

Re: Smell of gas?
I have a 97 Ranger, and when the tank was full, it smelled like gas for a while. A week ago, while i was filling the tank, and it started to leak where the tank joins with the gas filler neck (I was fiiling it all the way up), i havent had time to check if it is only a busted o-ring or something worst. Maybe you should check it too the next time you fill the tank.

Re: Smell of gas?
On my 96 Mazda B3000/Ford Ranger, a strong gas smell was coming from around the gas tank, really bad on a hot day. Ended up being the filler hose had cracks in it where is connects to the tank. This is an easy fix. Removing the bed is way easier than trying to drop the gas tank. (6) #55 star head bolts, disconnect tail lights and gas filler inlet. Slide the bed back a few feet and you can get to the top of the tank. Dealer part is expensive, you can find one on ebay alot cheaper. I didn't have a new one on hand so I repaired my old one with heavy duty electrical tape and cloth gaffer tape. Its been holding fine for a year now. remove the hose and clamp from the end of the hose. Clean the hose where the cracks are with soap and water and let it dry. Wrap it over with electrical tape a good three wraps or so. Make sure you stretch the tape around so it will seal. Go over the electrical tape with the gaffer tape so it wont come unraveled. The hose has to stretch back over the tank inlet so you may want to put the gaffer tape after you fit the hose back on as the gaffer tape doesn't stretch that much.

Would make sure your hoses (filler and vent) have no cracks and that the clamps are tight. And stop topping it off. Overfilling can harm the evap system.
