Default Speedo Jumping all over the place....

Ok, so 7 days into my trip. Probably another 7 to go. The speedo is Driving me INSANE.... Its bouncing all over the place and when it starts bouncing it is making some crazy noises.

Its a 93 with a cable driven speedo. Anyone know the problem? Cable? Part on the tranny the cable hooks to? Cluster its self? I am to the point of trying to find parts or lube some something and fix it at my next stop this evening.

Any solid input from anyone that had the issue and fixed it would be Greatly appreciated.

My old 98 or 2002 did that while covered under factory warranty and they replaced the speedo head.

Speedo pick up is on transmission. It's cable driven.

If it's a high pitched squeal, seemingly in the dash, and the "bouncing" is never over what you believe is your true speed, then I'd bet on the cable.
I managed to get water inside a speedo cable once, did that exact thing you're describing, whenever it froze. Once it warmed up, the noise & jumping needle stopped.

Being lazy, I never did bother to fix it, LoL

I had a 98 Ford Escort with a cable driven speedo that ram to the tranny that did this. My auto shop teacher said the cable was, probable a bur on the inside catching on the housing, but I never bothered to fix it. If I was going 55 the needle would bounce from 50 to 60 so I always knew roughly how fast I was going.

My tempo just did this about 2 mos ago. After a week of the speedometer acting like this, finally it quit working all together, and the car wouldn't get out of first gear. And it's an automatic. Here the plastic gear inside the transmission that drives the cable and shifting governor broke.

Good info, but O'Reily's has a new cable for $17. Id just change it all together if I had to pull the old one loose. Would had been doing that last night at the motel if they had one in stock.

Is your truck 4x4? If so Im pretty sure the speed sensor is in the transfer case.

I am having this problem on my 2.3l rwd ranger right after I got an alignment...

I have to check it out tonight.. I'm annoyed to say the least.

It ONLY does it when it's in Drive and I am stopped... when I am moving the speedometer doesn't bounce at all... perfectly fine.

I ALSO hear some type of an interferance noise almost like static but it sounds like something is happening an up and down high pitched noise. Never heard this before nor had this issue until Monday. thought it might be the battery... probably going to change the speed sensor on the rear diff housing and check the wires.... Could they have done something with an alignment? Or is this just luck? Truck is an 01' and has 135k miles on it.

Getting this one:

Thanks,

Is this true for a 2001 Ranger 2.3L RWD Auto?

Does someone have a location exactly and a part for replacement?

Thanks,
-Nigel

That sensor is what goes in the rear diff right? Looks just like my rear abs speed sensor. My speedo runs off a cable from the trans to the odometer.

I fixed mine by taking the new cable out of the tube and tubing it us till it was dripping.
