Exclamation Weird smell when towing?

I was driving around with a 14' trailer today and I came to a very long and steep hill that had a 80 km/h speed limit. I floored it and the engine was revving at a steady 3000 rpm, but about half way up the hill I noticed a weird smell. It smelled almost exactly like burning/overheated brakes or burning rubber, or that smell that you have after cutting metal with a grinder. But I wasn't using my brakes at all. My dad said it might be my clutch slipping from too much torque, but he's not sure. Mind you i have a 2002 2WD Automatic 5spd with the vulcan 3.0 V6 and the Overdrive in the OFF position. Now there is no way the combined weight of the trailer and the garbage in it were over 2200 pounds, so I am not sure if too much stress could have caused something in the engine to start to burn or wear. Anyways when I started smelling that weird stench, I immediately let of the gas and went to a lower rpm to reduce the torque. I put on my hazards and crawled up the hill the rest of the way. So some questions are:
do you think that I was towing too much weight up the hill?
What do you think was causing the smell?
Is it a serious problem that I should definitely avoid for next time?

P.S. all of my dash gauges were showing normal engine temps and normal oil pressure and no warning lights came on.

Should check the tranny is it has enought fluid. Would be wise to drain/refill/place filter. Also you should have an tranny cooler, if you don't you need to get one. If you have one, make sure its working correctly. Also check the rear axle fluid, and would be wise to drain and refill this. And check if the seal needs replacing (it'll be leaking).

Knowing the mileage of the truck would help us out. As its likely to be the rear end leaking since it hasn't been taking care of if its high miles. They tend to leak at around 100-150k.

the truck has 129000 km on it. and the rear axle fluid is fluid inside the differential? I will check for any leaks. could it have alot of damage?

Pull the trans dipstick and smell it to see if it has a burnt smell. Random thoughts: siezed brake caliper/pad; exhaust pipe touching the spare tire...

Yes I think I was pushing it too hard. it was a prudy big trailer for a small truck and I started going up the hill at like 5 km/h so I had no run at it. Because of this I floored it and I think It was just not enough of a run at the hill. I would have made it up no problem if I had momentum.

With the engine floored and only able at to run 3000 rpm's, because of the load, its kind of like power braking it. You were running at the converter stall speed. when you do a converter stall speed test it is usually 30 seconds or less so you do not overheat the converter. You overheated the transmission and fluid.

hate to break it to you, but your truck isn't built to haul a loaded 14ft trailer. its a 3.0....

you overheated your trans and started to burn up the clutchpack. if you want your trans to last any longer, you'll not be hauling that trailer anymore.

His trans overrated not the engine... Don't degrade a 3.0 until you've pulled with it.

dont defend a shit engine until you've driven something with actual torque and performance numbers.
