I know and agree, it sounds like a candidate for a bad wheel bearing. But did you also remember to grab onto, tug, etc and inspect the u-joints on the half shafts?

Just a FYI, not sure if you know it or not, but the correct way to service that axle nut is to replace it with a new one each and every time it's removed. Yeah I know, some people slobber loctite onto it, slap it on and call it a day, but I (and you?) travel places lots of people don't, and at times and in weather where a problem would be more inconvenient than words can describe.
