Default Deceleration

Here are a few symptoms I'm getting.

I drive a 01 Ranger XLT 4.0 V6 (automatic)

Whenever I let off the gas my car seems to decelerate awfully fast. My brother used the analogy; it feels like when I let off my gas the tires have a bunch of glue on them. Rather than coasting it seems like there is something trying to stop it but I'm not touching the breaks.

This may not be related at all but another thing I noticed is when I am trying to stop (with the brake) it seems like my brakes have 2 distinct modes. When I ease on the brakes just a tad it all seems normal, but when I need to apply a little bit more pressure to the pedal, my truck goes into like super brake mode. Like there's a threshold of smooth braking such is very slow to stop but its smooth, then when I cross that threshold it's rough to stop but I stop much faster. There's no in between .

You may want to check to make sure the pins slide freely for regualr maintenance and peace of mind. What you are describing is actually normal, the deceleration issue kicks in after a few seconds right? That's your ECM shutting off your fuel injectors, most vehicles do this nowadays. The stopping issue is caused by the Duo-Servo Bendix rear brake setup the Ranger and most heavy-duty trucks use. Once you cross that braking threshold the literally dig into the drums much harder and increase your braking pressure exponentially.
