Default Hmm, good buy?

http://www.krautoinc.com/2004_Ford_R..._180831070.veh

****************************

Hey, new here.just thought id ask if this is a decent buy?
04 RANGER
8,995 (gonna pay cash so maybe take off 500-1000)
86,XXX miles
4X4
STICK

Test drove it, but it made a "clicking" sound coming from somewhere in the engine compartment.sounded like plastic hitting plastic, but not 100% on what it could be.other than that it drove PERFECTLY.shifted amazing and the engine "looks" very clean. there is an auto mechanic shop across the street and the guy came over and said "truck run perfect, nothing wrong with truck, u buy truck it will last long time". my 1st thought was that this a**hole is just trying to scam me into buying this truck, so i don't know what to think about that...my dad went with me (he know very little about cars/trucks) and said its fine its a 9 yr old truck, which it is, but i don't want to buy it and get ****ed over.if it did not make that sound i would have gave the guy a deposit last night, but i didn't feel 100% comfortable with the sound it was making. ANY/ALL feedback would be appreciated.
thxs,
bajadan

Was it a constant clicking, or intermittant? The AC compressor is pretty noisy on mine when it kicks on and off and makes a pretty loud click sound when it engages. It's not a constant though, just an intermittant click as the compressor engages and disengages.

Looks good to me i would buy it in a heart beat, i can hear faint clicking in the valve covers on mine but its fine/normal. My belt or pully is ticking a little right now but thats no biggie so unless its coming from the back of the engine or is really loud i wouldnt be to worried about it.

im not sure, its has exhaust tips on it so it make it a little hard to hear when i was driving it.but u can hear it constantly at idle (had it running for 10-15mins), but it did quiet down after it warmed up. and with the hood popped u can hear plain as day. it was inspected in jan, but im not sure when the last oil change was done, of course if i do buy it i would change all the fluids. i really do like the truck...

Could be the timing chain. 4.0s had a problem with those making noise...my buddies truck actually threw the chain straight through the valve covers

YES,,, when I bought my FX-4 it had constant 'clicking' sounds. Thought it was something simple like valve lifters or exhaust leak,,,,,, turned out to be the fucking timing chains,,,,,careful on buying this one dude,,,,

I thought by 04 they had "fixed" the timing chain issues? or were they just not as common as 03+? It looks like a nice, clean truck from the pictures.

I don't know if they fixed the issue or not but I'm still a little skeptical about the 4.0's since I've had bad luck with them. To me the 3.0 or as many of you guys refer to as 3.slow is a FAR more reliable engine. 06 Sport with 144k miles runs brand new and no sounds. Can't even hear the engine it's so quiet.
