Also, Fuel pump just like any pump is designed to be completely submerged. Not only are you running alot of debris through it from the bottom of the tank but the pump could over heat...keeping it submerged helps to keep it cool, especially on hot summer days and long trips. Fuel filter will take care of the debris but still not good for the pump.

A fuel filter does not protect the fuel pump.

I go 35 miles with it on all the time with 4 bucks a gallon

Mine too and I think I still have about 3 gallons left when the light comes on

The fuel strainer protects the fuel pump. And there is no need to keep the pump submerged. How do you think cars with external pumps worked?
