Default Anti-theft system problems

I am having problems with the anti-theft system on my 2007 Ford Ranger.
For some reason it sporadically keeps tripping, and the truck won't start.
When this happens, the anti theft light starts blinking rapidly, and it will not turn over.
Also, sometimes it happens when I'm driving... suddenly the engine light will come on, and all other dashboard gages stop working. When I pull over and shut the truck off, the anti-theft light will come on, and again the truck will not start.

It does eventually reset after about 30-60mins, and suddenly the truck will start again.
But, by then I'm usually late for work...very frustrating!

I brought the truck into the dealership and they charged me $300 to update my PCM software, which they say addressed related symptoms and fault codes...
But, the anti-theft still keeps tripping. They checked the keys, and the battery and they all tested good.

Please help with any advice!

Have you tried using any of your spare keys? If you damaged the chip in the key somehow it can cause it to mess up.

bumping this...

My 2007 is doing the same thing now but has not reset after 2 days... It has definitely done it intermittently to me before but hasn't left me stranded until now. (good thing its at the house). I'm thinking about a PCM retune to eliminate the PATS in the PCM.

Any TSB's or anything?

I'm not sure if you can actually remove PATS.

For my Ranger, after 3 months of the dealer ship trying to upgrade the PCM and then put in a used PCM (when this happened suddenly my odometer reading went from 122,000 miles to 500,000!) They finally ordered me a new module which cost approximately $1000.00. That did fix the problem and so far so good.
I have to say, I love my Ranger and that was the only problem I've had with the truck for 5 years. I just wished that the dealer ship would have replaced the module in the first place...
