2000 ranger. 4.0L. 4x4. Manual tranny. 86k mi.
Grinding noise coming from front end.
Happens when mainly in first gear, also in second.
Happens when launching, and turning from a launch.
Made worse when more gas is given.
I have not noticed it travelling at normal speeds.
Also speed of rpms and vehicle do not seem to affect it.
There is also a louder popping noise when in 4x4, low only(auto locking hubs).
Any feedback is much apreciated!

Jack it up and see what kid of movement you've got. Sounds like wheel bearings are wasted. If they get too hot they will bind everything up.

If front end checks ok, time to service front diff and see what that look like. Ive heard that is not fun.

thanks. Ill check it out. Hopefully its just the bearings then!

so it wasnt the bearings. They were in good condition. I guess next comes checking
the front dif tomorrow. Any other ideas floating around out there?

Don't the front drive shafts have cv joints? May be bad boots/no grease on the joints?

Ball joints could be a suspect as well. When they go bad it sounds like a popping or clunking in your front end.
